Why do Americans spend tens of millions of dollars on something completely unneeded?

If most consumers were aware of the outrageous mark-ups/profit margins on most furniture there would be outrage...

Whew! and for a moment, I thought I might be guilty of being an ignorant American.

But...

I've slept on a futon on a platform bed I made for the past 30 years. Doubt I'll change now.

Those box springs drive me nuts. All the mattress places around here won't warrantee without buying their boxspring. I've seen the inside of enough of them to know its just a spacer with no purpose unlike the old spring mesh ones of the 40's.

We do not have one btw but its because we have a eurostyle bed that wouldn't work with one.

The common American box springs and mattress arrangement, especially the springs.

Bruce

But the box springs make such a great seed bed tool ... and what a great source of steel rod stock!

We tossed our box springs about 2-3 months ago. Had a welder extend the legs on our frame, put wooden slats across it and have under-bed storage space. We have a latex mattress and the manufacturer said to not put it on a box spring--it had to breathe.

My 'good' mattress is in the guest room, and I've been sleeping on the same mattress for a dozen years that I did 50 yrs ago as a teenager. I've been asked why, but thought it obvious that "I can use one less blanket than if sleeping on the floor." .... And they say there are no dumb questions ....

I could have just gone my way without posting, but I was so sure that post #20 was right on the mark. :D

I do have a foundation bought in 1995.

It's true, it could be eliminated by a taller frame, or just put the mattress on the floor. Somehow it's a longer trip to upright now than it used to be , but we have gone several years here and there with no bed frame. Our old California king water bed had nice storage underneath. :)

The second mattress set is on the foundation now and probably soon due for new mattresses. It's a king size bed. We use the split foundations and mattresses for easy handling.

I would never have guessed  I suppose it is true but.

just put the mattress on the floor

When we bought our Sleep Number bed in 2002, their foundation was included. It isn't listed separately on the paperwork, so I don't know how much it would cost alone. But a year or so later, part of it broke, so we actually did put the mattress on the floor for a few nights. When I called the company, the lady was not surprised, said they'd had a problem, and promptly sent some new parts that look the same, but are supposed different material, and we've had no more problems with it. They came at no cost to us, of course.

HAHA. This reminds me of the furnished apartment that I had in London. The owner put in a bed that was only about a foot off the floor to the top of the mattress. I had trouble getting up off it in the morning but I managed. When the wife arrived about 2 weeks later, she immediately called the realty and demanded a real bed. They brought one that afternoon. Older folks just cant sleep on a mattress on the floor, at least most of us cant. Spacers are a needed item with the current design of bed frames. Our current beds are just shy of waist high (33"), a bit too high to set on the bed and put on your socks without kinda hopping up on the bed so your feet dangle.
