You need to use a Mr Funnel when you fill the tractor tank. The spill proof cans will not work with a funnel.

I use Power Service in the white bottle year round. I get it at Wall Mart. Tractor Supply has it too.
Put 3 Oz. in the yellow can before you fill the can.

I buy it from whoever has it at the lowest price when I need it.

Mr Funnel? Water separating device of some sort?

Is diesel quality that bad at a comsumer pump?

The fuel's not the problem condensation is the issue.

Yep. Diesel and water seem to like each other too much - but without help from another agent, don't actually mix. A Mr. Funnel uses a stainless steel screen with a grid size small enough to stop water molecules from passing through - but lets the diesel flow. Simple, resuable, and it works. Needless to say that also stops dirt.

Plus spilled diesel on your hands or clothes sticks with you - and the big funnel helps prevent the oops factor. I have the 8" version which sets on my filler neck very nicely and makes it easy to control the flow from a 5 gallon can.

All,

This has been a very informative thread. I thank you all for your time.

Stopped by Wally-World and picked up a 5gal self-venting yellow Blitz diesel can and a bottle of Power Service. On order is a 8in Mr Funnel non-conductive funnel.

Reviewing the manual online it appears the engine has a clear plastic sort of filter. What exactly does this do? Is there a filter element within the clear housing? Is it clear so that you can see trapped grim and water?

I set my 5 gallon plastic tanks on the hood on a towel and use a TSC kerosene siphon to pump the fuel into the tank. You squeeze the bulb to pump it. Once it gets going, it siphons. Goes in quickly.

I use a mix of yellow and blue tanks. Made the mistake of putting some kero (a couple gallons) from a blue tank one time. Plainly marked each blue tank "diesel" a couple of places now. (Went ahead and ran it with the kero. You can blend them up to 50/50 but fuel use will be more with kero.)

I thought the X595 were the sexiest looking of the 2210, 4410 and X595 trio. Didn't try one. Found out they are much lighter duty on the 3 pt. Went with my 4010. Its fixed ROPS fits underneath normal doorways.

Doesn't the X595 have a fuel filter bowl on it? That's all you need to detect water. In 28 years of running diesel fuel cars, I've never had a water problem. Benzes don't even have a fuel bowl. Always carry a spare filter in case I do. Just never have. Have had plenty of problems with water in gasoline-fueled cars.

I'm with Ralph on the water issue. The bowl is there to seperate water from the fuel. The most I have ever found is a drop when changing the filter, and I used to burn a lot of fuel. Keeping your tank full is the best way to keep water out of the system. If you do find water in the bowl on a regular basis then change gas station's. The bowl will have a filter in it as well. As far as the bowl being clear I don't think it matters. You will feel a drop off in power, performance and other problems before you see much in the bowl. If you do find a lot of crud in the bowl, then pull the tank and clean it. Filtering at fill up's is a good idea to keep out stuff, but you will get more dirt in the tank unscrewing the cap than filling it. Always blow, wipe or wash off the fuel cap before unscrewing it. That cap is a dirt magnet and each time you fill, a little dirt can fall in. As far as additive's to each his own. All I have ever done is put stabilizer in the fuel before I put up the machines for the winter and they fire up in the spring with no trouble.
Hope this helps.

I keep my fuel cap clean by putting a small towel between the door over it and the cap. I use that small towel on the hood to cushion the hood against the plastic can when I sit it there to siphon fuel into the tank.

The rag sounds like a good idea. I use air and blow off everything I can on the tractor at every fill up.

See attached picture of my new X595!

My "helper" is posed and ready to put it to work!

Simply amazing the difference in torque and smoothness between the diesel and the kawa engines. The Yanmar diesel wins hands down!
