Why did you choose a X595 over the 2210?

I feel the dark side pulling me in......to a 2210 (Darth 2210?)

After searching and reading posts on comparisons most posts leaned towards the 2210 but I know several TBN'rs went with the X595 instead. It couldn't be due to price or capabilities, seems like the 2210 beats the X595 in both catagories.

Will be used for mowing (2 + acres) and snow removal, FEL would be nice but outside my budget for now.

Now the X595 looks so close to my X485 that my wife wouldn't notice the difference, initially. She doesn't use it. The ROPs on the 2210 would give it away immediately!

The one big advantage of an X-series over the sub-cuts like the 2210 - weight, or rather the lack of it. IF :

*The vast bulk of your use is in lawn mowing, but

* You still have other homestead chores such that a ZTR isn't a good overall choice, and

* IF you have either a delicate or primo lawn (or both), then

IMO The X-series is probably the better unit. Lots of folks mow lawns with heavier machines than the X-series and get results perfectly acceptable to them, but there is no denying a lighter footprint is better on the lawn. The lack of a ROPS also makes it easier to get under the trees and what not but that is certainly a mixed blessing.

If your mix of duties is more diverse, then the 2210 has to be considered the more versatile machine.

FYI - Deere seems to have some incentives right now on the X-series that may not be advertised on the web site. My local dealer (who is strict MSRP on lawn and garden tractors) had them marked down something like $1,400-$2,600 if I recall correctly. Seemed to me he had around $9100 on an X400 with deck - it was either an X485 or X495. Either way, more discount than I've seen before on an X. Deere is supposedly re-doing their entire L&G lineup above the L-class machines, not sure if that extends all the way to the X-series or not. (Again IMO), the 'new and improved' lines that Deere has released recently are not necessarily better in all ways. Often something has been lost in the process. So, if you really like the current X-series machines now might be the time to strike.

Thanks for the comparison. I thing that if FEL work is a primary use of the tractor I would go with the 2210. Since the tractor is for primary mowing and snow removal, it will suit my needs better (and it will "blend" into my garage better). /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have never owned a diesel tractor. Can I use my plastic 5gal gas can (empty of course)? Do I add some some sort of fuel stabilizer? Do I buy fuel at the local gas station that has a diesel pump?

So many questions!


PSS If all the pieces fall into place, my new X595 will be delivered Friday!

Buy some new cans. Diesel should be in yellow, there are even some legal restrictions about what types of fuel can go in what color can. I think the most common is that gasoline can only go in red. Anyway, a few bucks for a new can might save some real aggravation down the road someday if someone doesn't pay attention to which red can they grabbed!

On-road diesel from your local pump is fine, except you're paying needless road tax for a use (off-road tractor) where you're not really required to pay that tax. For the amount of fuel your X595 will burn, unlikely to make enough difference to worry about unless you've got a real handy nearby off-road diesel source that will sell in small quantities.

Don't buy too much at one time. Diesel is a bit fussier than gas in long-term storage. Plus, if you'll use it in the winter and it gets cold where you are - the summer and winter blends are different. Summer fuel will try to gel up in the winter.

There are simple and inexpensive additives that will help out with the gelling, help the fuel last longer, and actually have better flow/lube/cetane properties than the raw fuel. Look for PowerService and Stanadyne products. You probably don't absolutely need them, but they don't hurt.

Your biggest enemy will be water in the fuel - diesels do not like that. Keep the tractor tank full to keep condensation under control, keep your fuel fresh, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a water-trapping fuel filler funnel. Look for Mr. Funnel.

Did you need the 4wd and that's why you traded a X485 for a X595?
Buy the yellow plastic diesel can and go to the local pump. The same as car/truck diesel. No additives needed this time of year.

I agree with all the above, but strongly urge you to consider future uses, such as the mentioned loader, tiller, rear blade etc. If you are sure they are not in the cards, and that you just want to mow/blow, then the X should be the right choice. Resale would be better on the 2210, but that might not be a deciding factor to you.

As for the diesel fuel, many of us add PowerService or some kind of cetane booster and anti-gel formula. You could use the red gas can, but I feel safer with the yellow diesel cans (maybe you're dealer will throw one in). One thing you are going to notice is the level of power -- your 485 was no slouch here, but the diesel is going to open up your eyes! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really wanted the X595 with 4WD and the diesel engine when I bought the X485. At that time the delta in $s was too much for me.

With the current incentives and 0%, it pushed me to what I really wanted. It so happens my X485 is in the shop for a surging issue. I called to check on my X485 and as a side comment mentioned the X595. Once thing led to another and the dealer called me back and made me an offer that just pushed me over the fence.

He has people wanting my X485. I wanted a X595. The pieces fell into place. One point to make that I didn't believe until now was the resale/trade-in value of John Deere. The dealer is very very good to me.
