Why crane operators are licensed?

Most hydraulic cranes don't have free spool capability & won't cable down fast enough to save themselves. MikeD74T

Maybe not but from what I see in the video there was plenty of time to save it. Unless the footing on the outrigger was already compromised.

Looks , to me , like the typical thing these days, where one guy's working and fifty are waiting to make something off it. I don't see a time when the operator could have sat it back down. 1 mistake 500 opinions from the gallery. the last poster must be superhuman for his comment. jm

you guys ever set units with helicopters? kraft foods in NJ. crains don't go that far. call carson.

Agreed, I didn't say it was not preventable. There was pleny of time to NOT get into the situation in the first place. Operator should have known the load weight & range of reach of the crane with that load. Outriggers may have punched thru but that indicates inadequate prep, ie dunnage under the pads. From the way the load was immediately swinging it's obvious the job was off to a disasterous start.
One factor may have come into play that an experienced operator would have known. Shippers sometimes lie about cargo weight to save shipping/permit costs, especially on single dense objects. More than a few cranes have been lost to underestimated load weights. MikeD74T

If you watch close you can see that after the stone hits the ground it swong away from the crane shifting the center of gravity of the stone away from the crane. Just enough to get it going.

That'll buff right out.

Yes but a big part of the weight of the stone would already rest on the ground then... I.E. Not being lifted by the crane anymore.

Is that right? I guess this proves that is not a good idea.

Without an investigation, speculation runs in all directions. There are so many factors that could cause this accident. We had a one of our trucks hit a 260,000 volt power line and burn it off one time. It blew just about every hydraulic line off the boom. He was carrying a load of pipe up over a hill on a temporary road into a construction site, the so called engineering forgot to take into consideration that heat has a tendency to allow high tension wires to sag. He got the blame until someone figured out what happen besides having to throw away his underwear.
