Why By a Motorhome or RV?

/ Why By a Motorhome or RV? #11
We use our camper to go places where there are no hotels available. We enjoy getting out away from the crowds, it's more comfortable than a tent. Often camping is free where we go because we don't need services, they're built into the camper.

We know who slept in our bed last, we know who used our bathroom last. We know when the sheets were laundered. We can take more stuff (toys), our dogs are welcome in the camper, but not most hotels.

That said, we don't haul the camper across the country for a 1 week vacation, we'll fly and stay in a hotel.

Yea I know Buy not By, my bad:)

I have been reading the thread below with interest and have had many discussions with the wife and we can not understand the draw of using this form of traveling, help me understand, are we missing something?

Re: Advice on a motorhome please http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/related-topics/284092-advice-motorhome-please.html

By no way am I putting down this way of travel, I just do not see the advantages of traveling this way. The disadvantages I see are as follows:
1. A lot of $$ to buy and maintain the vehicle
2. Cost of fuel with low miles to the gallon
3. Parking close to another RV and listing to the noise all night long
4. You have to cook and clean the RV everyday ( wife dislikes this the most),
5. Increased travel time from one place to another.y

Background

We have been married for 34 years and have traveled a lot, we are 3 states shy of seeing the lower 48. All of our travel have been 2-3 weeks at a time 2 times a year during the summer. We either drive and or fly and rent a car and stay in hotels most times at Spring Hill Suites, Holiday Inn Express, etc. We plan the trip in detail and book all hotels months in advance and know where we will stay each night and what we will see. We even know what options we have for dinner by reviewing Trip Advisor in each town/city we visit.

Thanks for your insight and again I am NOT putting RVing down I guess I just need to understand it better.

Advantages:
1. Never having to poop in a strange toilet = priceless
2. ............ maybe not many more advantages.

hee hee

Its a hobby like anything else. Initial cost of RV, insurance, maintenance, plates, taxes, gas, etc... can be similar to small, medium and large boats.

While RV's can be a major ongoing expense most of the viewers here can get out for less than many owners because of their skills. In 2007 we bought our 1993 32' Pursuit built on a 1992 Chevy P30 motorhome chassis with 91K miles for $7995 from owner of it for the prior 10 years. It is now at 109K miles and never missed a beat on our 2011 8000 mile cross country. Of the 31 days we stayed in one federal campground, one state campground and one private campground. I think we stayed in hotels nine nights and the rest we slept where we shut off the motor.

Like a boat, horse, etc one could try RV'ing. Buy a new $300K MH and five years later it will be worth about half that. A large number in a few years while be using it very little but one does not know until they try it. Older MH's will suck up another $5K the first couple years of ownership often.

Renting a MH is not cheap but can be cheaper than owning plus if you can walk away from an accident you would grab a rental car and keep going or return home. Own a MH and have an accident 3000 from home you have to deal with it.

I think with the price of fuel the heyday of large RV's are behind us forever. A 25' class B would be of interest if I was not going to live in it. At 32' we have never towed because it can go about any place UPS can deliver.

I don't think I would ever buy a new RV, the first year's depreciation alone would kill me! I've always bought ones that were 3 to 4 years old and have yet to regret it. My current fifth wheel is a 1998 model, bought it in 2002. Still in good shape, needs nothing and as far as I'm concerned, still looks pretty good. By buying it after all the initial depreciation had dropped the market value, I was able to pay cash for it, property taxes/license plates are next to nothing and I just have it insured for six months of the year. I don't see much sense in paying for insurance when it's sitting in the barn.

You commented about firewood in March and guns in May. There's sites for that, too.

Lighten up and enjoy the conversation. :)
