Yes he did....and he caught the one in the other whopper catfish post too. And all because he bought a tractor from us a few years back....at least I think that's the reason for his success. Maybe he has studied the habits of flathead giganticus as well, and spent countless hours trying different baits in different situations, but I'm pretty sure it was buying the tractor from us.

What were you using?

My grandparents had a friend, Injun Joe. He was Maidu, and this was in the 60's before it became incorrect politically. Joe, he ran a D8 Cat, and worked on the Auburn Dam. This is outside of Sacramento, on the American river. This project was halted for various reasons back in the late 70's.

In order to work on various parts of the dam site, they would re-channel the American River. They'd dig the diversion channel, and then when the river flowed that way, they would work in and around the original channel. When they did this, they would fill in the pools in the old channel.

When they filled in the pools, they would have some of the most amazingly stupendously shockingly HUGE catfish flopping around in the mud. I saw a couple of them when I was 12 or 13. He'd bring them home and have them for dinner. For a week I have never seen such huge catfish since(the ones you caught are pretty big though).

How many people fish with a D8 Cat This was before power-bait; I think he taped a worm to the front blade of that Cat

Sad thing is, shut down the dam project, and the place is just a construction mess.

Nice story. I use bluegill for bait. I think the world record for this particular species is 123lbs and the Ohio state record is 76.5. That has stood since 1979.

Live and kickin. I use Green Sunfish too, they work equally as well, live longer and are more lively. The ones I used last weekend were so lively they pulled themselves off the hook. I usually trim the tail fins off the bigger ones so I can keep them in place.
