Re: Who-Who Can\'t Read?

I got my camera, but he was more interested in looking at the catfish eating than paying attention to me taking his picture.

Re: Who-Who Can\'t Read?

Owls are the coolest birds, plus they eat a lot of rodents.

When we lived in Midland (TX), one of the high schools there had an ongoing science project where kids collected and dissected owl casts, and kept track of what they were eating from the bones. As I remember, it was something like 95% field mice.

Nice pictures.

That's cool! We have a large owl that looks about that size living in my pines. I love to hear him hooting every evening. I think they must stay in one area, because we've had the same owl around for at least 3 years now. He's getting more used to people, but so far not enough to be photographed like yours. That's awesome. Owls are cool.

Amazing pics Jim!

I've never seen one in the wild that close. You're lucky to have the opportunity. We're lucky you shared it with us.

My encounters with owls are when they fly out of a tree close by scaring the dickens out of me. The big ones can make an aweful noise that I'm not expecting!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

By the way, whens the wedding?

Re: Who-Who Can\'t Read?

We had an abundance of coyotes a few years back so a friend trapped out about 4 or 5 of them. The result was we were then overrun by rabbits. This year we have more hawks and owls then in the 16 years we've lived here, the balance of nature at work.

A couple of weeks ago my 11 year old son came bustin' into the house very excited after watching an owl snatch a little rabbit from the yard. Country living is priceless.

Does PETA know these animals are killing each other? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Who-Who Can\'t Read?

Vin, I've tried to identify this owl and it seems it's a barred owl or a spotted owl from it's size, black eyes, and feather markings. It was also about 16" or larger.

I'm not sure what is next. Like Dargo mentioned, I've been listening to this owl for years just about sundown and scared him away a few times. For some reason when the fish started splashing, he just flew down by the edge of the water and watched (listened?) intently. I was able to walk right up within a couple of meters of him and only when I tried to get close enough for a full head-shot did he fly away. Then it was only to a tree about 4 meters away. When I turned my back to go back to my truck, he flew behind me back to the water's edge. I definitely got the impression I was interfering with his fishing. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I didn't even know they ate fish. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Maybe Sneaky Pete can tell me if he ever found fish bones in their castings.

Eddie, my father used to tell me about hearing screech-owls in East Texas. Do you have any of those?

...and Curt, I think we have plenty of coyotes if you want some of mine. My fiance, Kathy, just called me to say one of her goats was killed last night, probably by coyotes. She just found it's partially consumed carcass. I guess it could have been domestic dogs, but I know we have lots of coyotes in our area. The hawks and owls sure do help control the rodent population too. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
