Who, what did this?

My dog was about to have a snack from this egg when I finally saw what he was after & ran him off. It was laid among the roots of a large red oak tree that is right outside our back yard. It was pretty much visible from all sides, & there was no nest. It's larger than a chicken egg. Here are a couple of pics. The toe of my beat up tennis shoe is in one & my pocket knife is in the other, to help you judge its size.

I saw the remains of another egg about this size last week. It was at the base of my compost pile out in the pasture.

Any thoughts about who did this?

Around here we call them "Carolina Geese" cuz they have never been to Canada! Stopped migating quite a few generations ago!

Canadian goose would be my guess also.

How can you tell if the Canada Goose egg is Canadian? I bet it's American.

If it were a little more speckled (hard to see exactly in the photo), I'd also suggest it might be wild turkey, or if it is just larger than a chicken egg, it could be guinea.

It sounds to me from the other responses that most likely it is a goose egg.

If it were a Canada Goose, wouldn't you expect to have seen the parents hanging around and annoying everything in the general area of the nest?
