Who rides motorcycles?

Recent histories here, has me thinking of MC's in the context of a sparring partner....

Visiting Grandma's farm, a neighbour had me try to ride his CanAm 175 on his front lawn. My first ride.... Stalled it first time, kicked it for a while, then once it fired, I reflexively dropped the clutch. Tore off across the lawn, laid it down before hitting a fence. I was mortified by what I'd done with somebody else's machine (no damage), but owner was totally cool. I was hooked.

A generous neighbour/offer ^ that day many years ago, but knowing what I do now, not how I'd introduce a beginner to riding.

Having the right training partner is a minor part of the equation; most of the rest of it, is the focus, dedication, and discipline you choose to apply..... part of why I'm still drawn to 2 wheels....

My goal now, is to keep sparring.....with the physics, wind, and dirt, for as long as possible.....

Had a BMW K1200GT. Wife and I rode it all over the country. Her knees got bad and she was unable to ride any more. It sat in the garage for 2 seasons and a friend from work stopped by saying he has recovered from cancer. He'd always admired the bike and I asked if he would like to buy it for 5 big ones. Due to surgery and college loans he told me he couldn't it at this time, I replied I'm sure you could come up with $5.00, he thought I was kidding him but I said I'm totally serous. He took out his wallet and with tears in his eyes handed me $5.00.

Your friend is lucky to have you as a friend... we need more people like you in this world.

Getting the throttle body out, is pretty involved. Have to clean the high idle circuitView attachment 2410155
Yours isn't quite that bad, but the pic reminded me of a Leno line.....

He was talking about one of his Duesenbergs (or a similar car from that era), explaining to someone how the cylinder head was not separate, but a one-piece casting with the engine.... requiring a valve-adjustment from the oil pan area..... "It's a lot like going to a Proctologist, for a root-canal".

I am also excited to see Kawasaki getting back into 2-stroke bikes... Maybe Honda will follow suit.

Dead of Winter, so am getting more reading in....

Presently re-reading Tim Ferris's Tools of Titans. BJ Miller is one of the people he interviewed (an MD, who is a triple amputee, and an avid motorcyclist. His limb loss was unrelated to MC riding, the Aprilia is an automatic, linked brakes, with controls re-located so he can activate them with his one hand).

Update... both of our new Scramblers are tagged and insured, and in our stable free and clear. We now have four bikes, two for her, two for me. I have a 2019 BMW R1250GS Adventure, and now a 2022 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE. She has a 2019 BMW F750GS and now a 2022 Triumph Scrambler 900 (Street Scrambler). We are smitten with the Adventure Riding style... and we love to venture off the beaten path.

My Scrambler is the XE model, 10" of suspension travel, lots of ground clearance, and gobs of torque. So much fun to ride, and the sound is addicting.

Throttle wheelies in 1st and 2nd are effortless, and the Karoo 4 tires are much better than I expected on the tarmac. I did some loose gravel roads this weekend on it, and it was so much fun.

Gonna be hard to pick which one I want to ride now... the BMW is so capable, and SO comfy, but the Triumph has so much soul... good to have decisions!
