Who rides motorcycles?

You don't have to worry about me going that fast for anything over a half mile . My other buddy's with the custom turbo will bury the tach at redline in top gear. He figures it is close to 180.
At 180 miles an hour a person is covering 5 tenths of a mile a second. On a motorcycle traveling at that speed one is 1 second away from becoming a greasy spot on a solid object.

How far do you travel in 1 second at 180 mph?

“This is a conversion of units from 180 mi/h to mi/s. Since only the time is changed we will use 1 h = 3600 s. The car travels 1/20 miles per second or it travels 0.05 miles per second.”

Your math might be a wee bit off. 5/10 is equal to 1/2. That is 2640 feet. The speed of sound is 1125 feet per second. So, according to your math, 180MPH is over twice the speed of sound? Hell of a sonic boom. ;)

Not my math I sent the question to a College Professor.

But math or not, if one is traveling 180 miles an hour on a motor cycle and hits something they will collect his/her remains with a sponge.

I concur. In a past life, I was a volunteer firefighter for 28 years. We responded to many motorcycle MVAs in the rural area we serviced. High speed on a bike was always the main contributor to the ME coming out and pronouncing the victim was achieving ambient room temperature. I have picked up more than my share of body parts after a Hayabusa rider goes through a barbed wire fence doing even 80+ mph. If you were lucky and survived the crash and only your helmet was cracked, you got to take a $10,000 helicopter ride to the closest trauma center. Expensive 5 second adrenaline rush experience.

Not that I recommend speeding but a lots of motorcycle riders have gotten up and walked away after crashing at speeds way over 100mph

Thank you for the work you did for the FD. I take significant note of the the PTS you took on, in that role - you saw things that nobody should have to .

This following recent conversation may only make sense, if you ever rode (MC).....

A guy @ work (next office) joined us about a year ago. Senior guy, lots of experience. I've gotten to know him well enough, that I could joke with him about the Two fender benders (four wheel road vehicles) he has had in the last year....... "Perhaps, related to the brain-damage you've incurred working Here..." was my line. (Not totally joking, or worth going into here.....).

I asked him "How many road accidents did you have in the 10 years proceeding working here". Zero, the answer I expected. We both ride (MC), so then had a conversation about how being a long-running, responsible MC rider CAN enhance your general driving skills. It's all up to the person turning the key, and there CAN be high-value in consciously applying your 2-wheel routines/skills/practices to 4 wheel cages.

On 2 wheels, you HAVE TO be dialed-in, ALL the time. I (really) like that level of engagement, and is a key part of why I still ride. If someone doesn't get why that twisty, narrow road with nearly zero sight-lines has a low speed limit (just to pick one example), then they should stay off 2 wheels. Unless, as you pointed out, they want to become a pre-partitioned organ donor.

Rgds, D.

I had a teacher that survives 150+ MPH (last time he looked down and it was still climbing) hit the ditch, he survived but he lost a arm, it didn't looked like a fun experienced.

His math was correct, you just read it wrong. It's 5 hundredths of a mile, not 5 tenths... You're traveling 264 feet per second at 180MPH.

Thanks. I rode scoots for the better part of 30 years. I keep my MC license up, but I haven't ridden in many years. Sold my cruiser back in 2008. I hated riding the super slab, always enjoyed riding back country roads. Middle Tennessee has a lot of them out where I live. I always rode with my left hand covering the clutch lever. People would come flying down their driveways as you approached. You just automatically assumed they will pull out right in front of you. About 40% of them did. People are way too distracted by their phones while driving. One of the main reasons I quit riding is one of my best friends was killed on his bike in Nashville. No fault of his. A vehicle stopped on I-40 in rush hour traffic, my friend stopped, but the pickup truck behind him was texting on his phone and never saw him stop. Sandwiched him between both vehicles and threw him into the next lane, right under a 18 wheelers tires. Killed him instantly.
