Ok. I have been looking around and im hoping this issue isn't worst case scenerio. My 1700 BD has always blown a little WHITE smoke. Always seemed to blow more while in high range. Hauling some dirt up hill with the pond scoop today it seemed worse than ever. Looked like an old steam locomotive comming up the hill. had it in second gear high range. So i dropped down to fifth in low gear then in third low range. Same thing. In the past if i would shift in to low range the smoke would clear a little and not be quite as bad or if i put the brush hog on under load the smoke would clear. Not today. At times it appeared to be puffing., IE the smoke would not blow as bad and then it would get thicker then taper off and again get thicker. When I shut down durring a break and started up later there was little to no smoke at start up. When it warmed up it would start again. Doesn't appeare to have any power loss. If so it's nominal. No over heating. Fresh diesel. No blow by at the dip stick or coolant. White smoke from the breather tube but no sign of oil drip. I guess it would be oil slobber (small trickle) run down the exhaust. It is an old, i guess, origional exhaust. Sounds normal. Used to leak at the fuel bowel but thats fixed. No apparant leaks around injectors. Could use some help. Dealer wasn't much on help in past.

to me white smoke means steam.. As in coolant leak into the engine

well after looking a little closer i think this white smoke is more of a bluish white. smells more like diesel as opposed to a burnt oil smell. re checked the radiator and no signs of oil or brownish froth. took the dip stick out again and no sign of oil blowing out. no signs of leaks around the injectors. realized there is oily slobber trickeling out of exh manifold. after running hard yesterday and today i was down about a half qt oil. no oil or fuel drips on the floor of the garage. Working again today i noticed the smoke is relatively light to non exhistant at idle. Starts when i put it in gear and start moving.

Sounds like rings. Still could also partly be plugged fuel filter. A fuel starved diesel will blow white smoke. Has it lost power.

I think i may have figured out how to post vids. If this works you can see it smoking a little at start up then it clears at idle. When it is put in gear it starts smoking decent. Not so bad going down hill but once starting up hill is starts to smoke worse. This is in low range fifth gear with no load or PTO activation running at about 1800-1900 rpm. Really appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks much.

Seem like you are burning oil. Ring job should do the trick.

probably cheaper to just dedicate myself to putting it under the knife this winter. Hopefully it'll hold out till then and not get any worse. Guess if i start buying rings and others now there won't be a big price tag all at once. Maybe the boss lady won't kill me come winter. So my next question is does any one own a service manual for the equivilant of a 1700 since ill probably have to buy one now. How usefull did you find it and were there any detremental discrepancies since (i think) i have to buy one for the closest US model. Or does any one know if a service manual for a 1700 has been transcribed yet?

Here's my advice as I rebuilt my 1300D last year--it was smoking similar to your 1700.

Don't buy parts such as piston rings until you see what size piston rings are in your engine. You may not even need new piston rings. Other issues can cause smoking such as bad valve stem oil seals.

Call Hoye Tractor or Danny Parker at Parker Equipment company ( or e-mail them) and ask what should be the compression of of your engine when it is cold. (My engine has 25 to 1 compression ratio, so it should be around 525psi or more, howerver it was about 410psi max). Then, purchase a Harbor Freight diesel engine compression tester(less than 30 bucks) and check your compression. If your compression is OK, then maybe your valvle stem oil seals are bad---if this is the case, you can repair this for less than 10 bucks. You will have to remove the fuel injectors to check compression--but this is not a big deal.

It required a ring job to repair my engine, and while I had it down I had a local auto machine shop to do a valve job. No new valves were required. What I found in my engine was that someone had done a complete engine rebuild, new pistons (not OEM), new cylinder liners, new bearings and so forth. However, the piston rings had loss their tension--probably poor quality. Danny Parker happened to have 2 new Yanmar OEM pistons with rings, and since they were such a good price, I changed them out as well. I did the complete top end and replaced the rod bearings(which I did not need to do, but did anyway) for 200 bucks or so. The cost of rebuilding engines is in the labor. DIY and save big bucks.

I had a similar problem with my Yanmar (after 30 years of abuse). I replaced the pistons, rings, sleeves and valves. The blow by coming out of the vent tube is a key indicator that you are loosing compression into the block.
