I have actually used eastern red cedar as flooring in my home in two rooms- kitchen and utility/dog room. I initially chose the cedar to mimic the heart pine flooring in the rest of our house. The house is over 230 years old and has wide plank flooring that looks rather red in two rooms. The rest are tongue and groove and have never been finished. Anyway, the cedar I used is 1" thick over plywood in the kitchen and 3/4" of plywood in the utility room. The sawyer managed to get us almost completely red heartwood - no white sapwood. Both were finished using watco Danish oil in natural. The kitchen floor has been down for over 10 years and has held up quite well. The utility room has been down for ove 8 years and also has held up well under the traffic of 2 great Pyrenees dogs who are 110 and 132 lbs respectively. So in my experience, eastern red cedar does well as a flooring material with simply finishing with an oil topcoat. And it smells good for quite a while:) Of course I have no experience at all with western white cedar and it may behave completely differently.

What have you got to lose? Try it in a small area and see what happens.
