Wohoo my first post! I’m been debating on getting a tractor and what size I should get. I’ve read numerous posts here for a couple of months about what brand, size, weight, HP, etc. that people recommend. I started off thinking a bigger CUT would work, but when I take into account what I want to do in the future it made me decide on a utility tractor. I know this forum is more for CUT, but I’ve seen several post about bigger utility tractors so I hope this post will be okay. Also I’ll go ahead and apologize for a big post (just wanted to make sure all the facts were presented).

This year I took over as the operator on my mom’s farm (around 80acres). The farm is broken into roughly 65% wooded, 25% fields, & 10% pasture. The fields are flat to rolling with just a steeper spots. Around half of the fields are bottoms that get flooded about every 10 years. We currently have a ~30 year old Ford 3600 with a FEL. My plans for this farm over the next 2-3 years is to put out ~5 ac of berries & ~2ac of corn, get 2-3 horses & maybe 5-10 head of cattle. The bottoms will more than likely be put into square bales for the horses and cattle and sell any remaining. Also I’ll be building on an acre of land.

That’s that, BUT here is where the wishful thinking/future comes in! There is a neighboring “farm” across the river that I’d like to purchase. I use the term “farm” very loosely. It hasn’t been a farm in about 50-80 years. As you can imagine, it is extremely grow up with a little bit of everything. Also the only way to get to this land is through the river (no roads). Now before you call me crazy /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, this land has over a mile of river frontage, will probably be about 80 acres with 50-60 being fields and another 10-15 being pasture. Also most of this land was cleared at one time(if that really matters now). I'm hoping to get the land reasonably priced because of the access and condition. The only thing the land is being used for is hunting by 2-3 people a few times a year, which I'd continue to let them hunt if they wanted.

Now that you know what I’ll be doing and what I might be doing, let’s talk about tractors. The top three that I narrowed it down to is 1) NH TN75A 2)JD 5320 3) Kubota M6800 (all with 4wd). The prices I’ve got included a FEL with QA setup, at least a 72” bucket, canopy, block heater, grill guard, & two rear hydraulic ports. The reason the TN75 tops the list is I like the layout, weight, good PTO HP, and the lift capacities of the 3pt hitch and loader. The JD5320 is nice, but the HP isn’t as good as the NH (I also can’t afford the 5420 in case you ask). I really liked the Kubota (lowest price), but the loader capacity was about 1000lb less than the TN75. As you can tell the lift capacity of the loader and 3pt is very important since I’ll be using it a lot to clear the land. Also I plan to round bale the hay that will come off this land.

Is the TN75A the best choice? Is there something else out there that will meet my specs? Any opinions or recommendation are more than welcomed!!!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Welcome to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
but the loader capacity was about 1000lb less than the TN75

Unless I missed something, the 2 tractors compare very close for loader and 3PH capacities. I only see about 100lbs. not 1000lbs. Some to the NH favor some to Kubota favor.

Hi Kmanvt, welcome to TBN, I am not sure I read you right but are you implying you are considering crossing that river with a farm tractor and a brand new one to boot ? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Im going to throw in another brand the 400 series Masseys they are not as fancy but every bit as tough. And most likely cheaper. But thats my two cents. we have ran Massey's for over 30 years and they have every option that the others have but until started round baling hay Shuttle shift and Indepent PTO were thought of as un needed luxry's by most of you'r farmers.
But the decision is you'rs too make and my best advice is to buy from the dealer that will take the best care of you.
Mine will bring me parts to the house if I need them and which I havent needed anything yet but that he brought this up when saleing me the tractor. And since my salesman lives near me I beleive him.
And if I had to choose somthing besides a Massey it would be the Deere.

May I ask what country you are in? Does it snow where you live? Are you within a thousand miles of a town?

This is my way of saying you should fill in your profile.

Also, what dealers are near you, how far away are they, and have they been in the Ag tractor business very long?

Clearing land is tough on machinery & your new tractor will be looking old real quick. Have you considered a much larger 100-150HP old used tractor JD4020 IH 1066 etc? Once the land is cleared or close to done sell the beast & then buy new & maintain.

Separately consider construction type equipment: an industrial TLB and or a dozer both have their niche and can be indespensible! An ag tractor can dig & push but not nearly as efficient.

My new utility tractor is a Zetor. For me it was the most value per dollar & excellent long term dealer. As others stated regardless of brand buy from a dealer you are confident will be in business.

Make sure the tractor chosen can handle the Baling chores.

Sounds like a little land cultivation also so the tractor should have the ability to pull ground engaging equipment you choose.

Mayhaps think in the agricultureal line of tractors.

I haven't decided yet on the blue one. The specs I was comparing was:

TN75 w/32LC
3pt. - 3960 lbs
lift cap. max ht. - 2600lbs (@31.5")

M6800 w/LA1002
3pt. - 3307lbs
lift cap. max ht. - 1985lbs(@19.7")

I "assumed" the additional ~12" would further decrease the capacity of the LA1002 another 300-400lbs making it around 1000lbs difference. I may look into the M8200 to see what the price of that one is!

There is a ford currently there to get across. With the river at normal height the max depth would be around 12-16".

I'll look more into the MF tractors particularly the 471 or 481 with that 1060 or 1070 loader. Thanks!

I wasn't going to try and pull any stumps probably over 6". Most of the land that I would like to clear is just tall Johnson grass, wild rose bushes, and brush in general averaging 5-10' in height. I would think that one of these tractors should handle something like that easily. I'd like to also get a root rake/grapple to help with this job. If I could ever get a road to it I would probably bring in a dozer to take care of any stumps or large jobs I didn't want to tackle.

I hoping the total weight of the tractor (filled tires & loader) will run around 7000+ lbs. I would think the weight along with the HP I would be able to handle any ground engagement that I would want to do.

I think you will be well served to keep the Ford 3600 with the fel if it is in good condition. You can do a lot of work with it. At the same time be scouting around for a good used ag tractor in the 70-100 hp range. Many are out there. After you purchase the new farm, get your farms shaped up with the older equipment. By then you'll know what tractor you need and can then get by with one. Trust me "stuff" will happen to the tractors while you are getting the land under control. I'd much prefer that it happen to an old tractor. Besides under this plan you get to shop twice for a tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What about the Mahindra 7520?
tractor weight with out loader:7200 lbs
3 pt lift capacity: 5500 lbs
Loader lift capacity to full height at pins: 3900lbs, at 132"
breakout force 5500 lbs
* availible with selfleveling on the loader also
I'm not shure where but there ar dealers in Tennesse, if you go to www.mahindrausa.com there is a dealer locater.
- As far as crossing the river, how deep, wide etc? is it hard bottom?

/ Which Utility Tractor? (long post) #11
OK I see where what you are saying.
The 3PH spec's for the M8200 were only 1435. Must be a misprint.

I would go with the TN75 if it was between it and the 6800. I looked at those a couple years back and was impressed with them. I went with a Deere 5420 because it was cheaper and there was no comparison with the cab.

I would hire someone with a dozer to clear the trash trees and large unwanted items and then buy the tractor you like best.

I agree with keeping the 3600 Ford I wish I had two tractors one that I could just mow with. Looks like your using your head and doing your studies. Good luck.

Is it that hard on a tractor to do basic brush clearing??? I’m not to worried about the trees/stumps right now. I can always remove the stumps that I need to by hand!?! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I’ll be keeping the 3600 for at least another 4-6 years to do basic mowing, raking, etc. After that I’d like to get something my wife could easily handle.

The river is not that big of a problem. The river is about 40yds wide, but the way the crossing is setup you drive about 80yds in the water. The bottom is not soft, but not real hard either (sort of a mixture of sand and rocks the size of a baseball to football). Every now and then the current owner will take a Ford 8N over.

I’m a little leery of “off brands”, companies I’ve never heard of or seen local to me (Kioti, Mahindra, etc.) I’m not saying they are bad, just I’ve never seen one on a farm or lot. Probably 80% of the tractors around me are either Ford/NH or Massey Ferguson with John Deere in third.

IT WAS CHEAPER???????? I priced a used 2003 JD 5320 w/ FEL and it was only a $1000 cheaper than a new NH TN75A w/ FEL!?!?! A new JD 5320 was going to be about $2-3K more. I'm looking at spending less than $32K. If I could get a JD 5420 around that price I would definitely consider it!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

With a cab I only paid $34,500 for my 5420. I will see what a new 5420 would cost.

I could get a base 5420 with dual rear scv's and mfwd for $26,989. The base 542 loader would be $3750 with standard bucket.

Lotsa good suggestions. One thing slipped by me in all this:

get 2-3 horses & maybe 5-10 head of cattle. The bottoms will more than likely be put into square bales for the horses and cattle and sell any remaining.

How do you justify setting up for haying in this setup. I mean, I am sure it is fun, but with all the equipment and labor costs; isn't it pretty reasonable just to have it delivered? I know each of us has to decide these things for himself, and it may well be worth your while. But it sure is a good idea to lay out all the costs and see what your return is.

Both the JD 5420 and NH TN75 are awesome machines... I'll take one of each, please!

If I could get a price like that I'd come real close to going green. I don't think my local JD dealer with even come close to that!

I get the same thing with the New Holland and kubota dealers. I tryed to buy a New Holland a couple months ago and couldn't even get a $1 off of list. If you're close to Iowa it might be worth a trip for you. But if you can get a comparable deal, 23-25% off list, there on a New Holland that is a nice tractor too.
