This is the first year I've had the luxury of having a tractor to help to do work, but I haven't fully figured out when to use all my different attachments yet.

I've got one small tract that Im going to be planting that was plowed and disced about a month ago, and has just sat there since with no additional work to it.

It's got quite a few patches of grass that have come back into it, with some of the grass 4-6 inches tall or so, so I'm sure it has a somewhat decent root to some of it. If I were to guess, I'd say 25% or so of the tract has grass back in it spread through out.

The ground is still rather soft and hasn't compacted much. Would discing take care of the grass sufficiently for planting in the next week or so? Or do I need to plow it again, let it compost some, then disc again? Thanks

You'd probably be fine hitting it with the disks again.

I agree, assuming your Disc Harrow has at least 18" diameter pans. This will be most successful at reducing grass if you have 3-4 dry, sunny days after you disc.

You do not want to overwork Georgia clay with either a plow or disc or it will turn into adobe brick when dry.

Sounds good, thanks. I'm not sure exactly what size my discs are but I've got cutting wheels in the front and smooth in the rear. I'll give that shot once it dries up some and see what happens

Disc it, repeatedly if needed, plant. :)

I would try to disc it a few times and get it worked up pretty good and let it set a couple days for the grass to die and then hit it again to kill some more. If you just hit it and plant you won't know how well you did killing the grass. Ed

As has been mentioned - you should only plow once to loosen/break the ground and bury any grass. From that point on, disking will provide the best results and prepare the plot for planting.
