Which thermostat do I use

   / Which thermostat do I use #11
Before it gets really cold I want to flush my coolant and change the thermostat. My year tractor came with a 160* thermostat. New Holland now has 180* and 190* thermostats. Would it be a bad move to go to a hotter thermostat? Thanks

On few occasion when it was subzero and even with the right T-stat I could not reach operating temp at the middle or skosh higher. What I have done was simply to take a piece of card board (cereal box or corrugated) and covered 1/2 of radiator. l placed the card board between radiator and the dirt screen and that promptly brought my operating temp to the middle. The card board is self supporting between the fins and screen. Of course you do not want to forget that you are blocking the radiator air for warmer or summer condition.

JC,

I remember doing that with my old Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser. I had the radiator partially covered from Nov-March. That thing just didn't want to make any heat. All the drafts from the body rotting out didn't help either.

it wouldn't be bad in the winter, it will help a great deal in providing better heat for the cab heater!.

Cab heater??
There are very few Ford 1920's around with cab heaters

He he:laughing: I had the Fred Flinstone emergency brake from the hole right under my brake pedal when I was in college on my chevy chevette. I had to have extra thick sole on my shoe to brake :laughing:Finally duct taped a piece of sheet metal over the hole and a piece of carpet and I was good to go. I know in some eastern block countries covering the radiator in winter is common thing and removing thermostat on some middle eastern countries with warm and arid climate is a normal thing as well.

We can look back now and chuckle, but at the time we just did what we had to do with the resources available.... aren't we still doing that?:)
