I am starting up a lawn care business which plan to operate for about 5-7 years while I am in school. I have been studying hard on mowers. I personally like the ferris 1500 48". If I had more $ I would get dixie chopper. Should I get the Ferris? My next pick is exmark. Big negative is not grease fittings! Grease is free for me and prevents many problems! I don't mind greasing a machine. Scag is also a pick. I am using a Scag now and is a good mower being as it has 1900 hrs and seems to be doing fine but it is not mine. Which ZTR should I get, Ferris, Scag, or Exmark? Thanks for the advice. I would like to know ups and downs of all. Sorry to ask for so much but I need to know these kind of things when spending thousands.

You left out some other good ones like Hustler, Bad Boy and Grasshopper, among others. I think MOST of the guys on this forum are using theirs for their own (homeowners) use. The web site you should spend some time at is one of the commercial LCO forums, like Lawnsite. You can get a lot of info there from lots of guys who do it for a living like you, and they aren't always nearly so brand loyal as most of us here, I would guess. When it's your bread and butter, you'll switch to the brand/model that gets the best production and reliability, comfort, dealer support, etc., etc. Just my 2-cents.

Be sure to take a good look at Walker Mowers. A fantastic mower with a variety of styles for any pro.:)

Spend the extra money and get the ferris 2000 series. The 1500 is not a true independent suspension, the 2000 series are.

Lawnsite.com is where the lawn pro's hang out, they are fiercely loyal to their brand, whatever it might be.
How many lawns to do you have, how big are they, do they have gates you need to worry about getting through, are they open and level, are they packed with tree's and hilly?
The answer to these questions will help us answer your question.

I have 2 yards now that are 2 acres and 4 acres. I am wanting to get into subdivisions, so that is why I am getting a smaller deck to fit into back yards.

I have never had a ZTR and I really don't need one. I have done some commercial mowing. I went to my local Stihl dealer to buy some parts a couple of weeks ago. They sell Scag mowers. They had a display model sectioned in half. Motor, deck, all the bearings were all sectioned in halves. I was impressed. I have seen very few pieces of machinery as well built. I'm a heavy duty type of guy. I like things over built. Scag is over built. They had a Scag ZTR 72" cut with a Caterpillar diesel engine ZTR. I like Cat motors. It was $14,000 and in my opinion worth every penny.

I would highly recommend that you spend some time driving around and seeing what the competition is using. While you'll see a variety of brands, you will also see just a few over and over again. Here, where we get about 4 ft of rain a year, have a ten month growing season and lawn care is a HUGE industry, there are two brands that I see all over the place. Exmark and Scag. I went with Scag and love it. I looked at Exmark and was really leaning towards the Kubota, but nothing really compared to the build of the Scag. I really liked the water cooled engine too.

Since you are doing this profesionly, be sure to stick with commercial grade mowers. Some of the ones people mentioned are more for estate mowing and not meant for five days a week, constant use. They are also more comfortable then a commercial mower, but with comfort, you give up a degree of strength.

Even if you are looking at used mowers, go to the dealer and ask them about their mowers. Dealer support is always your number one concern when buying any piece of equipment. It's even more important when you are using that equipment for your income. If a part breaks, you are not making any money until it's fixed. Plus you are more then likely annoying your clients. It's a simple thing, but one that puts allot of guys out of business.

One of the things I really liked about Kubota is that they are about as good as it gets for parts and service. My Scag dealer is also my Echo and Stihl dealer. I've never needed any parts from him for anything, but have always been able to get get chains and supplies from him. A good inventory is nice to have. I go there, and he has what I want in stock. It will be interesting to see what happens when I need a major repair.

Good luck, like any business, it's all about doing what you say you will.

Demo a few. My local SCAG dealer brought out one. So did the Grasshopper dealer. I bought the Grasshopper mainly because you could get extra long handles for it and I'm 6'9" and the shorter handles on other brands hit my knees. The kubota dealer wanted to cut and weld on the handles to get his to fit me. I didn't like the idea of cutting on a brand new mower.

Also, Grasshopper is made in Kansas. Money stays at home (USA).

Dealer support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Narrow down to what is local and close, then narrow those down to the best relationship and service.

I've used Hustler, Lesco, John Deere, and now Scag. The Scag Turf Tiger is a very well built mower and leaves a great cut. I'm not a fan of Kohler motors, but this one has been pretty good so far. I personally will never own another Hustler, but that is mainly due to dealer.
