Which oil is king?

( does anyone remember Arco Graphite oil. It was pitch black, looked like tar--it was not on the market very long )

Yep, I remember it . . . for one reason only. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I think I've mentioned this before on the forum, but over 20 years ago when we were living in town, I was out mowing the yard one day when I heard the next door neighbor start his late model Olds 98, and it sounded terrible. He backed out into the alley, drove forward about 30 feet and stopped to ask me what I thought was wrong with his car. I told him it sounded to me like all the hydraulic lifters were stuck and he better check his oil. Then he told me he had just finished changing oil and filter and the guy at the parts house where he bought his oil had suggested that he try that new Arco Graphite oil. So we drained that Arco Graphite out, put on another new oil filter and filled it up with regular oil and within two or three seconds it was running quietly again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif So I've seen Arco Graphite used once; total time about 2 minutes; total distance about 50 feet. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And the parts house did refund his money for that stuff.

So what you are saying is, anyone that doesn't use Mobile 1 is wrong. I see now /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I saw a comparison but I can't remeber where. The JD oil did very well. It was better than Rotella and just very ,very slightly edged Delo in a few tests.

If Delo is cheaper that is what I am going with and I already use it in my truck so it makes it easy.

I use to use Rotella and I am sure it is fine but every time I see tests Delo does better in just about every catagory. Don't know what that means in the REAL world but it can't be bad. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've never found Delvac I easy to find. I suspect Guttman, a distributor out of Pittsburgh, may be the only source for your area. The other drawback was in the past, the smallest container was a gallon jug. When you're doing a change on a truck engine, you don't want to mess with several cases of quart containers but for someone using it in a small engine, it may not be convenient.

There really is no " king of Oils"

The refiners, and there aren't that many of them, will be changing the adative package to the base stock as new conditions/requirements or adatives become avialabe.

Refiners will package and label oil with whatever adative package the purchaser wants. Usually the higher the cost of oil the better the adative package.

You will also find these refineries need turnarounds every so often. When that happens you may just see a competitor packageing oil for the refinery thats down.

"So what you are saying is, anyone that doesn't use Mobile 1 is wrong. I see now" ---no, I did not say that, I am not going to agree with you it is KING either /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

I said that the JD oil or Kubota for that matter is likely a very plain oil. It meets their needs and performs well for the intended use. Is it KING OF OIL--the question asked by this thread---NO. A pretty JD package does not by alchemy transform it into KING OF OIL.
Yeah, I am stubborn, hate me, I don't care. I am on topic and on Thread addressing the question of which oil is KING.
Mobil 1 was introduced in 1973 in Europe. It is factory fill for Aston Martin, Corvette, Mercedes AMG, Porche and the Ford Cobra R. It's heavy diesel equivelent, Delvac 1 is called the million mile oil and is a superior product. it is said there is no testing, call the Mobil 1 tech line and they likely will send you a brocure--real purty, that goes into more detail. Mobil is a huge company with increadible resources now combined with Exxon. Shells recent combination with Quaker State so I hear is not a bad thing either. Research money will increase, better prodcuts will result.
Synthetic oils are more stable at high temps, they flow better at cold temps, they retain their viscosity longer under any condition, especially extreme conditions, the viscosity index modifiers, long chain polymers that uncoil as temp increases to provide the viscosity range, that break down in conventional oils are not even really present in quantity in a true synthetic like Mobil 1 and Amsoil and a few others.
The thread was KING OF OIL, I do not expect anyone here to agree with me, I am simply presenting info and opinion pertinant to this thread. You did not expect me to agree that JD oil was actually KING OF OIL now did you /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif any more than I expect you to agree with me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If you guys don't want opinions or discussions, why start open ended threads like this asking which oil is KING /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif and then think everyone is going to say--"yeah, that JD oil is sure good stuff, I use it everything, even my washing machine"--go ahead, I am sure it is an adequate product /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I think john force said it best "I saw elvis at 330 ft" maybe castrol's new 5w-30 HDO is king?

I think delo 400, delvac 1300 or delvac 1 is better than rotella so pick one and go with it..

TresCrows,

No one ever suggested that JD oil was 'King of Oils'. Did they?

Nick posted "Just wondering how JD Plus 50 oil compares to the brands you guys are talking about. I've always used plus 50 in my JDs and I think it is a good oil."

As a matter of fact, no one but you suggested any oil was "King of Oils"

THE KING OF OIL IS THE ONE THAT YOU ARE MOST HAPPY WITH......

The one that fits your needs, is easily obtainable and affordable and of course has the API certification that meets or exceeds your tractor manufacturers specifications.
