Need info on which mower to purchase. I can get a 2005 grasshopper 721 D2 21 HP Kubota diesel with 500 hrs for $8500 or a 2005 grasshopper 727K 27 HP Kohler gas with 500 hours for $6000.00. Both are in good shape maybe the 721 is a little better the owner kept it like new and it has the canopy. Also I know the guy with the 721 and found the 727 on craigslist. Which one. I cut about 15 acres, many hills.

I have the 721 D and it is a great mower. Mine has the front mount power deck and has cut my mowing in half. 500 hrs on the motor is not bad ive seen them with 1200 and 1700 hrs and still ran like new.:)

I am thinking the 721 cause I know the owner very well and I know how he keeps up his mowers. I don't know the owner of the 727. Also the 721 had a crack and grasshopper replaced the deck for no charge (grasshopper customer service seems great) so the deck is like new. Just wasn't sure if it was worth the extra money.

Buford,

I don't know anything about either mower, but I do know that my ZTR with a 31 HP Kawasaki is not easy on the fuel. I haven't made any precise measurements on fuel consumption, but my guess is that it uses about one gallon/hour. I have a Kubota RTV 900 with a diesel engine that is a fuel miser. Of course, I don't operate it at high RPMs for extended periods as I do my mower. Reduced fuel costs may help reduce the higher upfront cost of the diesel. Also, I would think that the life expectancy of the diesel engine far exceeds that of the Kohler. Just my 2 cents.

The 721D without a doubt. Should be good for 3k plus in a commercial application if properly maintained. It will also use less fuel than a 27 Kohler.
