Which is #1 cylinder?

Hi. I'm a new subscriber who owns a MT372D and never had a diesel before. I've seen in some discussions on timing to bring the #1 cylinder to TDC or after TDC. My question is: Which is the #1 cylinder?

#1 is always closest to the front on all engines.

If you haven't already you should pick up a manual. I concur with piloon.
