Where to stay in Istanbul?

Come May, the wife & I are taking a long trip that will get us to London, Milan, Rome, Istanbul and Athens.

We are looking at some hotel lodgings in Istanbul and see some good/bad and indifferent.

Trying to research as to where to stay. Some of the reviews bash some 4/5 star hotels and some are ok.

I for one, prefer to stay in more of a historic OLD place, even if it might not be as antiseptically clean as a new Best Western. The wife on the other hand is more concerned with the place being antiseptically clean than having some age & character about it.

Sooooooooooooooooo, do we stay here, there... and it dawned on me... there might be someone here who's been there and if so, able to maybe give me some ideas on hotels (in Istanbul only...well...maybe Greece too)

Keep in mind a lot of reviews are based on a bad experience. The satisfied customers don't think of leaving a good review.

From what Ive seen motels here are far from clean. In fact some are just plain awful! That ranges from bedbugs to poorly washed sheets to glass drinking cups that arent properly washed.

Athens...the one just S of you or Greece? Never mind I know the answer.

LOL...I think if expectations are set for Greece the other Athens might be a hard sell. Although it has a certain beauty too...and is close to others hubs of civilization like Decatur and Ten Mile. Sorry for hi-jacking your thread...Ill stop now. When I read Athens it wasnt Greece that first popped into my mind.

Careful now, OLD over there is really OLD

Stick with the Western flagged hotels, they can arrange tours accordingly.

Echoing what JimG said, not sure how much you have traveled in some of those countries, but bad can be REALLY bad. That said, usually Great is fairly priced.

Oh, and if you go with the JimG Athens trip, you can always run over, visit me and go by Paris at the same time

I've been to an agent and am waiting for a time when I can get wife with her too.

As for avatar, yes. It is the "Klipschorn Jubilee". Paul Klipsch's last project. He wanted to take the Klipschorn back to a 2 way speaker. Some of his paramaters were:

1. Same footprint of Klipschorn (achieved)
2. Same or better efficiency than Khorn (achieved)
3. Lower distortion than Khorn (achieved)

and maybe something else or another.

It is a 2-way unit, same footprint of a Khorn, fits in corner, 109 db efficiency and has 1/3'rd the distortion a Khorn has.

These things will impress you at low volumes and if you want to turn it up, they will part your hair and sound outstanding while doing so.

PWK died before his plans could come to be and the company never pursued his desire to make these available for residential users. The company DID however, discover that it was good... SOO good, they were able to put it into their cinema (professional) lineup and it's there where you will find it as a 3-way version.

There are now about 13 people in the world that have these as viewed in my avatar, the 2-way version. Most are using active x-overs (either Electro Voice Dx-38 like me or some Crown Xti amps with xover built in). Actually, only one person, who built a clone pair (so that's 14 pair) is using a passive.

Anyway, ya... Here's a pic of my living room. If anyone ever cares to hav an audition you are welcome (seriously). they're awesome and you can get a pair for 'about' $7,000 (includes shipping to your door but does not include any crossover)
