where to buy a decent diesel fuel can

I'm not so sure that running a cordless drill chucked to a barrel pump in the vicinity of a big drum of fuel is such a good idea. A 12V fuel transfer pump motor is sealed and therefore "explosion proof". If I look through the cooling slots on any of my drills, 18V cordless or otherwise, the motors "spark up a storm" when they are running.

You are correct! If pumping gasoline I wouldn't have even considered it. Being that it is diesel and low flash point I'm not too concerned.

Going off of Lbrowns idea of the 15 to 30 gal drum, at one time I started getting my diesel in a 50 gal plastic drum. At the time a 12v pump wasn't in the budget so I bought a hand pump (the kind you crank). Worked well but after a few moments of cranking one day my mind started figuring a way to turn the crank some other way. I made an adapter with a set screw that I adapted my 1/2" cordless drill to, took off the handle of the pump, chucked the drill to the adapter and locked the set screw down on the flat of the pump shaft. Worked like a champ. No more cranking as long as I've got a charged battery. Of course filling drum can break the bank even off road fuel!

But the bite don't come as often as buying 5 gallon at a time does.

Yeah, probably OK but always good to do it in a well ventilated area. I tried the 45 gal. plastic barrel full of gasoline that we siphoned from a boat that we sold. (wasn't going to trade it in with almost full tanks!)

I bought a cheap hand crank barrel pump from our HF clone in Canada - Princess Auto, and used it once. The second time I went to use it, the pump was seized and wouldn't turn, so that barrel pump got a flying lesson straight into the dumpster. Maybe it wouldn't have seized with diesel in it.

Now I just stick to the useless vented-spout plastic 20L yellow cans for my farm diesel. The placement of the wide filler neck on my JD5425 allows me to pour the fuel straight in without even using the spout. The can empties very fast and I can do it without spilling a drop (usually). The Case 580 is the worst though, really was not meant to fill its fuel tank from cans. With the filler on top and in the center of the hood, just in front of the cab, I have to climb on the front tire, then onto the loader boom cylinder and try to pour into a big funnel without anything to rest the can on while it is taking its sweet time to empty. Not fun.

the very best fuel cans i have ever used are/were made by a company named Eagle: they still make the metal safety fuel cans, but the others they made were round: the only problem is when the filler cap breaks, its tough to find a replacement: jacks small engine on the internet has them, but by the time you pay shipping, i feel the price is to much to pay. these round fuel cans had a really good sized vent opening, so no problems with the glug glug junk when your trying to pour fuel. if you can find one with a good fuel cap, get it..they are really good containers.

Wonder how long it will be before people start using gallon oil containers and funnels? Some of them have a very wide spout that would be large enough to fill with a gas pump nozzle. The spout is large enough that a separate vent wouldn't be needed.

Get yourself a jiggle siphon. I bought one for filling my Bobcat and it was one of the best things I ever bought. Put one end in the can and the other in your tank. Jiggle the end in the can and then kick back while the fuel flows into the tank. :)

I bought mine at fleet farm but I suspect lots of places have them.
