I could use a good shade/canopy for my L4400. But $500, plus $300 shipping, ain't gonna cut it. Anyone have a better way? I've ruled out the lightweight fabric/umbrella types; they'd get ripped up under a tree the first day out.

I have a Kubota fiberglass one and like it just fine. I paid 575 for it from the dealer in my area.

My local golf cart business sells O.E.M. canopies for $20 (6 for $100) . They are brand new and come off of carts to be lifted and modified, etc. I bought 6 and plan on attaching them to some of my patio chairs.

I got my bright orange fiberglass canopy from local Kubota dealer - $570. Like it just fine.

I got a different one (plastic) a while back from ebay. It was for my john deere but it was slick. Allen head set screw type brackets instead of u bolts. Was very well made. *just checked ebay and don't see them now.
The one on my kubota came from the dealer and is fine. U bolt mounting but that's not a problem so far. I think it was $450 or so, purchased with the tractor.

Couple weeks ago, I bought the Rhinohide Easy Off for my Kubota BX. Costs around $350 and I can remove it easily when I don't want it. Very satisfied.

For what they charge, i'd weld up a metal frame (U-clamp it on) and slap some plywood on top of it.

You want cheap and effective, this is the way to go. Screw +$300 canopies.

Did both my L4330 and ZD326 ZTR, couldn't be happier.

I have a self made canvas screwed to PVC which can be lifted off easily when doing woods on my L3901, I have a from the dealer fiberglas on my F3080 which was hundreds of dollars, I have a hard plastic on my Kubota RTV which was a few hundred or less from dealer and I have a $30 golf cart top bought from auction with three under $3 each from Lowe's ubolts clamping it to the ROPS on my BX2370. Take your pick and pay your price. I posted the specifics on the PVC one last year so one could look under my name posts for tractor canopy/top if interested. My favorite is the PVC one since I pull 4 d clips and lift it off by myself and put it back on by myself. I have broken the zip ties a few times hitting tree limbs but another zip tie and it's back to good to go. The front edge of my fiberglas one is pretty broken up from hitting tree limbs but it still blocks the sun.
