5hrs is fine. I wouldn't bother changing it any sooner than that.

Re: when to change \"break in\" oil?

I have a Z-Force 50 and was wondering when and what needs to be done as well. I'm at about 7 hrs. now.

I don't seem to find the time / or remember to pull out the owner's manual when I'm at home ..... only when at work in front of my computer.

Thanks,
Greg

5-10 hours is fine, depending on type of work. Heavy hauling or hills = lower hour change. BTW stay away from synthetics for at LEAST 50 hours too.

Re: when to change \"break in\" oil?

A note concerning changing oil on these engines. Not sure whether you have ever had one of those Kohler engines with pressure lubrication, but when you change the break in oil, they want you to also change the filter on the first oil change. They only require you to change the filter every other oil change after that.
Also....the procedure is slightly different than changing oil on a car engine. Kohler recommends that prior to installing the new filter on the engine, that you first fill the new filter with new motor oil and let it set for several minutes so that the filter material will absorb the oil, then refill the filter and install it on the engine. This procedure is probably used in an attempt to prevent the engine from operating for a short time without oil after an oil change. These engines are also protected by an low oil shut down switch which could likely cause problems with starting if the procedure is not followed.

Just noticed my 2006 ZF50 has an oil drain extention hose. I guess this is in response to mess complaints on previous models. I'm sure the filter change will still cause a mess, though.

Re: when to change \"break in\" oil?

Filling the filter to "pre-lubricate" the filter media is fine. Since the filter lays horizontally on the Kohler Commands, completely filling this before installing will make a HUGE mess!!!

Re: when to change \"break in\" oil?

On those horizontal filters, I can see the presoak, but I sure wouldn't want to refill it just to pour it all over as I'm spinning it on! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The engine should be well lubed from being just ran (I always like the engine just slightly warm for an oil change). It should build pressure pretty quick anyway though.

I have yet to use true synthetics, but as far as I understand you want a couple more oil changes on normal changing frequency even after the break-in oil. Maybe there's other reasons to hold off for after 50hours too; either way I guess the math comes out the same.
