When did the phrase Compact Utility Tractor arrive?

I purchased several new tractors in the 70's, and the phrase didn't exist then?

I bought a B6100E in 84 and it was just a small tractor. The only one I could find/afford. I didn't even know who Kubota was, I don't remember the phrase used then.

At the local Kubota dealer in the mid-seventies, the largest Kubota was a 28 H.P./ 4 cylinder/ 2 wheel drive, and was not called a CUT? In fact, that was the largest they carried in an agricultural area, with farming and grape harvests. Then, in 1978, the first 4WD tractor in that horsepower range showed up, the L295DT, and I bought one of the first ones for $7800 with "ARMSTRONG POWER STEERING!" To get real power steering, was a special order, and added $500 to the bottom line, and a several month waiting period! Kubota may have built bigger tractors, but maybe they weren't sent to the U.S.? Also, the horse power ratings posted, were as complicated to figure as loader capacity is today. There was BARE-FLYWHEEL-NET, and finally the standard today--PTO! Where was it taken?

Also in that time frame was Kubotas L175 which was a two cylinder diesel without a water pump, but had a fan in the normal location and a fan belt, driven off the engine pulley. I was reluctant to buy one; since I didn't understand the principal of "thermal expansion!" There was nothing in the literature about it. After testing it, I was convinced it was perfect for my orchard spraying, with a 3 speed PTO, 8 forward-2 reverse gears 45 cu. in. engine, and 15 net horsepower. It has been absolutely trouble free.
