What's wrong with this tractor???

I think it came off a trailer- while being transported.

Here's a farfetched theory; looking at the chains, could someone have simply overtightened a chain binder around the middle on a trailer???? Although, Holmes, note the dent in the bucket which might indicate a traffic accident during transport... Or a tornado?

Definitely a catastrophic casting failure, looks like the chain is holding it up and together somewhat.

As far as the 3pt BH's, my back hoe is lifted with 3pt but is plate mounted to axle housing, there is an optional undercarriage that transfers some of the stress forward to the middle of the machine.

This undercarriage I think comes standard with the back hoes now but when I got mine I was never aware of it. they say in extreme service without the additional support that the machine can be literally broken in half. not to common but has happened especially to rental fleet machines.

I don't use my back hoe much, so for now I haven't bought the undercarriage yet. they say to help prevent greater stress to machine don't raise the rear wheels off the ground with outriggers, just use them as stabilizers and keep wheels in contact with ground.

Alot of people, myself included think you should have the machine way up in the air on the stabilizers.

Your operators manual will tell you different on a '3pt' BH.

I have a theory. It was being towed on a trailer with the back-end forward. While traveling at high speed the ROPS roll bar struck a low bridge or something. That may provide enough leverage to apply lots of force to the middle and break it in half.

I've never seen damages such as this from using a 3pt backhoe (tractor broken in half).

However, a search here on TBN will provide you some pictures of tractors that have suffered catastrophic damage to the rear axle housing (primarily at the top link) from 3pt backhoe's.

Nonetheless, $5K for that 790 would be good deal if you already owned a 790... be a great parts machine. And the loader is a newer generation and would be a step up from the 419 or model 70 loaders.

OK, I've done this search and I'm not seeing what your talking about.

Links please.

Willl -- this took about 2 minutes to find... I'll do some more digging, :) too. I've never seen the problem with JD. If memory serves, the last problem I recall in this regard was an orange or red tractor - maybe Kioti.
