a friend of mine is looking at a 2003 model jd 790 4wd with 220 hours on it.i have seen the tractor while in passing and it appears to be in good condition.the guy selling it for his son-in-law said that he needed a bigger tractor and this one has been kept in a barn all of its life except for the past month because it has been setting by the road letting people know that it is for sale.oh yeah he is also selling a 5 ft. rotary cutter, not sure of the brand, and 5 ft. box blade with it.what do you guys think that it is worth?he is asking $8,500.00 for the package.
thanks for the help,

I think it is a very good buy; I paid over $14,000 in the spring of 2000 for a new 790 with a FEL, Mid-PTO, & R-1 tires in Northern Calif.; that was OTD.

The price sounds good, especially for the hours. You could always add a JD 300 loader later for $2500 It will bolt right on. You will then wonder how you ever got anything done without it.

By staying in a barn, it should be in great shape with no rust or hidden corrosion. You will not have to pay $500+ in sales tax with it being a private sale and if you trust your friends dedication in maintaining his equipment, then I say go for it. He is a motivated seller; he wants a new tractor. All these things add up to a very good deal.

When I purchased my 790 in 2000; to put the Model 70 loader on for $2200, required additional hydraulic plumbing for the loader, that added $400-$500 to the bottom line? One may want to check with a local dealer before deciding, if that kit is still requred for the later designed loaders?

If the tractor has a dual SCV then the loader list price is $3130 and $3280 or so installed. Those numbers are at list price. I would sell this off my lot in Northern California installed for $2950 if the digits of the serial number are LV0790G790000 or higher. If the serial number is less than this there would be an additional $150 charge because of different mounting frames, hoses ect.

Be sure it has a dual SCV on it or there will be a good chunk more to pay. When you are in the seat the lever will be by your right leg.

I have a brand new 790 w/ loader 4x4 on the lot for 13,750...so your looking at a couple thou. savings for a tractor with no warranty and no 0% financing. Not to talk you out of anything but I would offer a bit less, especially if it does not have the dual SCV for the loader. If that tractor had a loader on it and R4 tires I would say it is worth about $9000 to $10,500.

You can call your local dealer to see about an aftermarket loader such as a Bush Hog 1846QT loader....this you could put on for a good amount less.
