It comes up quite a bit here. Try the forum search. You will find a few threads.
There are quite a few important differences with the tranny, frame, hydraulics, and engine.

The differences vary depending on which model and whether it is cab or not. Generally speaking, you get more hydraulic flow, more gears, more fuel capacity, more creature comfort(better seats, etc.), more available options on the "M" series. The "M's" are also a little heavier in overall weight. If you are looking at a specific HP rating, open or cab, 2wd or mfwd, we can get a little more specific.

Will be getting the 5075M mfwd, extra 3pth lift capacity, 2 rear remotes, 260 loader with front hydraulics, open station. I may get the Fransgurd V6500 logging winch and a Grapple, depending on the dealers price.

Speaking of price, anyone care to share the price's you paid on this type of tractor or attachments?

You may want to consider a 5085M if it's in your budget. They have a higher hydraulic flow and a 4 cylinder engine.

The differences between a 5083E and a similar 5000 M series are mostly in strength. The 3 point uses big tractor hydraulic cylinders to lift it, and the frame, trans and hydro pumps are all bigger and heavier duty. The E's use the engine as a frame, and the M's have an actual frame. However, the engines are the same displacement Hp and TQ. In fact they might be the exact same engines. The M series is heavier duty and that is why it costs more. It has more standard features, and creature comforts.
Bottom line is that the E series is a small utility tractor that is dressed up to look like a bigger tractor. The M series is bigger, Heavier, MORE expensive tractor trying to look smaller and fit in that market. The price is what scared me away from it.

Thank you, That was the info. I was looking for. Now if I can sell my JD 4700, I'll be buying a 5085M.

David,
one thing that was not mentioned, and it's something that I love about the M series. The electro-hydraulic 3PT hitch. Really makes using, and hooking up to, implements a breeze.

One more thing, if you can afford it, please consider the radial tire option for your new tractor. You won't regret it.

Yes, The radials will be on the tractor. How does the Elec. Hyd 3pth help? I know nothing about it.

The EH hitch comes with a switch on the rear of the tractor to adjust height of hitch while you are at the rear of the tractor connecting the implements. A lot easier than climbing back in the seat to make small adjustments.
