Hi, I am a new member considering a purchase of the JD 2520, concerned about some feedback regarding the crappy seat, what do you guys not like about it, piched forward? no suspension? please let's hear your feedback before I follow thru with a purchase.

Can it be upgraded via JD or do you have to retro fit another in?

A few other notes, what size bucket do you guys recomend?

Any other add on's that I should consider before buying, upgrading altenator?

Many thanks and BTW, nice site...very helpful.

depending on your application for the tractor a look at the 3120 is well worth it. the price difference is very small for the upgrade. and welcome to the site.

I haven't found the seat to be an issue at all, but some people want more cushion and an air suspension or they want armrests. There are several posts here about people swapping out their seats, a friendly dealer will probably do this for you as well but since it's not a Deere-approved upgrade not every dealer would be willing to do so. I'd go to the dealer and sit in it, since I'm typically in and out of the tractor a few times an hour I probably have a higher tolerance for seats than most.

What are you using your bucket for? Typically I go for the middle size (I've got a 53" bucket) as it's a good compromise, but if you're lifting heavy stuff or want to use it as a cutting edge (probably with a toothbar) you may want smaller. Conversely you may want a larger bucket if you lift light stuff and want the work to go faster. Luckily they're easy to swap if you make a mistake.

The upgraded alternator is a good idea if you want the lights, if no there's no real reason unless you plan on doing anything to tax the electrical system. Like everything, it's cheaper to get upgrades now but upgrading in the future is also not a horrible burden.

As for other things to get, that depends on your property and what implements you'll be getting. Having the dealer fill the tires is a good idea, but if you're mowing you may not want the extra weight. The hydraulic diverter is a great way to expand your hydraulic implement options. Power Beyond is a good idea even if you don't want a backhoe now.

There are threads that indicate the alternator upgrade is not needed even if you add the 2 forward facing lights and a rear work light. I added the brush guards to my lights. If you're going to use your loader, get the wheels filled. You might want suitcase weights as well and an implement hanging off the back for more weight. You can't go wrong with a box blade (I have the Frontier 2048 which weighs 385 lbs). 53" bucket works for me. I added a toothbar to make digging easier. Would not go bigger for dirt or gravel. You can always get an extra bucket. I added the pallet forks as well.

As far as the seat, I didn't find it all that uncomfortable, but the way it is pitched forward was quite annoying.

As discussed in depth here at TBN a while back, I followed Chris's suggestion:

I cut the top ring off the two rubber bumpers that support the rear of the seat.

This was a great improvement for me making the seat sit more level - no comfort issues at all for me since.
