KennyD's technique is spot on. I ran several 100 ft rolls of 1" black plastic pipe while installing an irrigation system on my 2 acre lawn using a sub-soiler. Having seen this idea on TBN, I abandoned my usual technique of renting a Ditch Witch and invested in a sub-soiler I purchased from Tractor Supply. This approach in my view is better than actually digging a trench because it saves the time and money you don't have to fill in the trench or re-seed. The very little disturbance the sub-soiler causes is easily remedied by simply walking or driving over the area which restores the lawn to its near original condition. My soil is easily penetratred, however you can always make an initial run (or more) to brake up the soil before running your pipe.
