My b-i-l has a cabin in the Black Hills. But he's a city boy in Houston (mechanical engineer by trade). While they were visiting over Christmas, we talked a lot about tractors. I showed him my BX and pointed out things on it that he should be looking for. He is going to build a pole barn this summer and then will retire up there in a few years. He'll need to handle some snow, but will also get firewood from the national forest slash piles. Also, he's looking at a box blade to maintain his driveway.

We were talking used stuff and what he should look for. I suggested a FEL and 3rd function grapple plus 2 remotes for top and tilt. He was a little afraid of a diesel in that cold, but I also suggested a block heater, the shed, and that he'd be way happier hauling a couple cans of diesel than many cans of gas.

So I got an email last night with a picture of him sitting on a brand new L3800. The dealer in Houston will get the FEL and mount it. He also bought a tandem axle trailer and will haul it up there himself. He took the 72 month 0% deal that ended last night.

Now, I won't get a lot of opportunity to drive it (640 miles away), but thanks to all of you, I think he's gonna be pretty happy with this unit. I also suggested loaded tires, bucket hooks, chains, block heater, and pointed him to a number of threads here (like 4shorts stuff) that would give him ideas. He doesn't weld (yet), but I could see him doing fab work pretty easy.

How cool! Set him up and get him going straight and show him how to be safe.

Now you just need to buy an adjoining place so you can both help each other with tractor stuff. My BIL lives just a couple hundred yards from me separated by our joint ownership bass pond. We both have two tractors and really only need one between us, but is makes things more enjoyable to share in the mowing, dirt moving/digging etc.
When you have multiple tractors, you can specialize on the equipment attached so if one has a mower, the other can have a disk and all but the 750 JD have FEL so moving stuff isnt an issue. The 750 John Deere 2 wheel drive we used just for post hole digger but now that fencing is completed, BIL is looking to sell it but not going to give it away as some callers want. So much of the tractor work is so much more productive with 2 tractors rather than one. I might have both my tractors out on a dirt project, digging with the B26 then hauling the dirt with the LS. I can make one trip with the LS where it would take maybe 3-4 with the B26 or sometime BIL will haul the spoils away while I dig. Its always better as a team to share the work as it seems to make it go faster.
