I'm with George. Go used. I bought a 6' Rhino from a member on here. It was in very good shape. I think I paid $575, might have been $600, can't remember for sure. Either way, 50% of new. Still got it. Haven't spent a dime on it.

There's a lot of price variation depending on make and model. I'm kinda hard on mine so want one that's durable. Stump pan is a must. slip clutch is preferred. Chains are a luxury in that size.

I also bought a used Rhino 6' with slip clutch for $500 (SE6 model). It had clearly been used, but wasn't all torn up....mostly just faded paint and some surface rust, with a few minor rock dings. For less than half of new I think it made a lot of sense.

To the OP, also wanted to mention, when you say Bush Hog, to most people, you are talking about a Bush Hog brand brush cutter. I guess the political correct term to describe a cutter is "Rotary Cutter. In my neck of the woods, it's a "Brush Cutter".

i understand there is a BUSH HOG brand. around here we have always called them bush hogs whether they are or not. i have also heard them called rotary cutters, brush hogs, brush cutters and bush hogs (maybe there are regional differences). i was asking about rotary cutters, not finish mowers and the consensus seems to be about 100 a ft upto 6 ft. if it's very nice it might be a bit more, beat up less go figure.

how about befco? is it considered a high end, lower end, good value? this is just a general question

The answer what you are willing to pay comes to mind. I'd like to find one, however I'm not willing to spend alot for one. I know someone with a Befco RMD 272 can't find much online about them there is a RMD 372 which I'm assuming is the new version. It is a medium duty (though not quite as medium duty as some others I've seen) 6 ft rotary cutter. has a slip clutch, front chain guards, doesn't look too beat up (a couple dings front and rear), paint is faded. What's a 6ft bush hog going for?

Used, light to medium-duty bush hog is around $350-$500 here, depending on condition.

Messick's sells, services and has parts for Befco implements. So it's not a totally unknown name - even if I personally am not at all familiar with it. :D

I am not a good one to ask. I paid $200 for a Bushhog brand 306 cutter. And its a tank. 90HP gearbox and 1100ish pounds. But it needed work. It had a nice rip in the 7 gauge top deck that I repaired, and a good cleaning and paint job.

IF you can weld and paint, as long as the gearbox is tight and pto shaft in good shape, it will expand you horizons on what to look for.

But for a "good" shape 6' medium to HD cutter, I'd say ~600ish. I know if I were to list my 306 for sale, I'd probably start around $800-$900 on it and likely not take less tha $700. But it aint for sale.

5 foot cutters are can go cheap around here since there are a ton of them. Move up to a larger unit and they become more rare and expensive. A usable 6 footer would cost about $750 with a good one closing in on a thousand. The heavier built they are the better. Be cautious of any unit that looks less well built than the others. Those are only good for mowing fields and weeds. King Kutter is not bad for the money.
