What would tree a raccoon?

The Fisher is this continent's Tasmanian Devil. Pound for pound apparently one of earth's top ten ferocious critters.

I've seen several coons treed by dogs (not a lot, but a few) and in my experience the coon stayed fairly close to, or even against, the trunk, even high up. But as I said, this is limited experience.

Speaking of tracks, I took this picture about 6 months ago. For scale you can see my shoe print at the top of the picture. Any Idea what this is?

Those are raccoon tracks (until someone tells me I'm all wet, which case I'll change my mind.) We have them all around our pond.

If it's a fisher they are like someone said pound for pound the meanest thing in the woods. Reports say they have killed turkeys off the roost. We saw something running one night in the yard, not a 'coon, skunk waddle but a run and then jump to trees. I was told it was most likely a fisher. No coons, posumes or skunks the last 3 years.:D

There must be a lot more going on in my back yard at night then I realized.

Always had at least one big dog around up until about 2 years ago. I'm sure that kept a lot of wild animals at a distance. Now that I don't have a dog I think I best bring a big light with me if I go out at night.

That's what they look like to me.

Hitekcountry:

I had a longer post about Fisher Cats, but my dial-up connection "ate it". The short version: When my neighbors start to lose their cats it is usually due to predation by coydogs, foxes, owls, and/or Fisher Cats. Around here the Fisher Cat's usual tactic is to tree their food before they catch and eat it . They are very comfortable in trees. Jay

PS: Fisher Cats also eat porcupines

Fisher Cats?

Never heard of them, are they aggressive towards people?[/QUOTE]

I lost one of my cats to a Fisher. Until then i knew nothing about them. When asking about them at the local wildlife/gun/sporting goods/taxidermy shop i was told :

A Fishercat is the meanest animal in the woods.

A six pound Fisher will easily take down a sixty pound dog.

A fisher is the only animal that will prey on a porcupine.

They generally will not bother humans, as a human would not be an easy target for them, but i have heard of them following folks to their doorstep, who are out walking their dog (hoping for a taste of dog). At the time i was surprised that a Fisher is not a cat at all, but a member of the weasel family.

A fisher was my first thought when i read this thread also..... but i have no idea if there are any in Ca.

Ductape:

The range map for Fisher Cats included some of the higher areas in CA; but the areas were localized. Jay
