I was wondering what you guys have used for posts into a pond for a dock? I forget the name of the grade off of the top of my head but there are some posts treated and coated for constant water contact.

I used locust posts cut off the property, prolly just jinxed myself. 20+ years so far.

There called marine piles. EXPENSIVE!!
I am embarrassed to admit but I can't remember the level that piles are treated too with CCA , is it something like 3.5 per cubic foot?? Above ground treated wood was like .6 I think? I could be totally wrong. I was a wood products minor, but after not useing it for 15 years you forget some things.

.40 is the rating for ground and fresh water contact. There is a huge jump in what you need for salt water. For above ground lumber, it's .25 percent.

Just going off memory, I believe all treated round posts are .40 and find for fresh water ponds.

I have two in my pond for a platform for a zip line that have been in there for 5 years so far and there is zero sign of decay. When I build my dock, I will use round posts from Lowes, Home Depot or McCoys for my posts. It just depends on who has the best looking posts when I decide to buy.

I don't know if our redgum makes it to you but it used to be stored in water to preserve it, doesn't float and doesn't rot, could be cost prohibitive if you can get it as it is very dense and heavy.

I've always been told that dock poles should be .80 and marine grade was 1.0...

Both are spl. order and very expensive.

.40 is for ground contact and .60 is for below grade, but both will rot in time and .40 rots easier than you would think, I hate to even buy .40 if it's near any wet ground.

I recall reading an article about any timber in ground situations and that a locally sourced timber will rot whereas a timber from a different region will last longer, this was well over 20 years ago and an explanation was given but that I cannot recall, someone else may be able to shed some light on this.
I do recall that a different region was not halfway around the world but probably just a few miles away where soil conditions were a bit different.

I think you'll find that the .4 is for CCA which is no longer available for residential use. Here's the replacement chemicals and their retention level based on application.

Pressure-Treated Wood: Types, Grading Standards & More | Decks.com

Retention Levels For Pressure-Treated Wood
Different applications impose different hazards on wood, and require different amounts of preservative for protection. These amounts are called 途etention levels, referring to the amount of preservative retained in the wood after treatment. Furthermore, each preservative has its individual retention level for these applications. Be sure to obtain wood treated for the application you have in mind. The intended use is identified on the tag stapled to each piece of lumber.
