Long story short. I ripped out the trailer wiring on a stump with my F350. This happened to be the same day that I was rewiring my gooseneck trailer.

I hooked up the wiring back on the truck to the 6-way plug the way I thought it was supposed to go and then rewired the trailer and new 6-way plug...and everything worked fine.

But...

I rented a dump trailer, also with a 6-way and my Prodigy brake controller started flashing 5h which is described as "detects brake wire short during idle condition". No trailer brakes and only one brake light. I thought their trailer was messed up, but then I rented another brand new dump trailer the other day and got the same thing.

Obviously I crossed wires somewhere on the truck. Is there anyway to tell which ones without starting from scratch?

Go to R&Pcarriages.com They have all the wiring diagrams you need under the help section.

Just be warrened, 6 way plugs are old tech. Everyone is using 7 ways now days. A big issue with a 6 way is there is two standards to wire them. So your truck may work with one trailer and not with another. This has been a issue with them for 20 years now and us the reason every manufacture went to the 7 way.

there are 2 6 pin wire 'standards' using the wrong standard puts power to brakes full time.. thus plugging in t he plug starts warming things up.

my old dodge had a 6 pin and my flatbed is 6pin.. i sodl the dodge and all my stuff is now 7pin. i need to convert the flatbed and horse trailer.. will get 'roundtoit one day.. till then i use a hoppy 6 to 7 adapter, that you can switch 2 wires internally to accomodate the 2 6 pin standards.

lets see if this pic link works

Sounds like I need to go to 7 pin. Luckily I only have the gn and horse trailer to change plugs on. BTW - The first dump that I rented was a 6 pin and the second a 7 pin that I found an adapter for after going to five or six places. Now I understand why all of the in-stock adapters were set up for 7 pin truck to 6 pin trailer.
