What was the best dog you've had?

We have had a lot of dogs in our life time, the best ones were always the Rat Terriers.
They don't eat much, they are good hunters and very loyal !
I agree with the RT's. We've had 3 Toy RT's, all living past 13 years. Little dogs with big hearts. Fearless!

I did not want to post here because in the last 35 years my wife and I have had 11 dogs that we have rescued in one way or another. Among them were three or four great dogs and two that were absolutely amazing.

On January 15 we answered an add on a farm forum for a free 8 month old pure bred Great Pyrenees. The owner was over the allotted limit of dogs for the town and was facing heavy fines. So we got a great dog named Augustus who is eager to please. good with most livestock, smart and loving.

Yesterday my bull had unplugged the tank deicer and dropped the cord in the water so the cord ended up frozen in the ice. I went into the pasture and walked the 40 feet to the water trough, broke the ice and re-routed the cord to make it less tempting. Auggie was taking care of big important puppy business while I walked back to the gate. Suddenly the bull decided I was not going anywhere and down I went. Things got bad from there, he would not let me up and tossed and rolled me about. He hooked a horn in my waistband and I was in the air, the next thing I knew I was face down in the snow with my pants around my ankles. Then Auggie was standing over me growling and snarling then he was chasing the bull off of me. I scampered to a nearby tree as I pulled up what was left of my pants.

With Auggie's help and a round bale feeder as a shield I got back to the gate and out of the pasture to a loving lickfest from Auggie. I did not get gored and nothing is broken but I hurt everywhere.

I feel that I owe my life to that dog, so he earns the best dog ever award from me.

I had a Rat Terrier and a Jack Russell Terrier at the same time. Quite a high energy pair.

I bet that dog eats steak for the rest of its life !! Or butcher the bull for hamburger after he has had his run and feed him to Auggie. Glad you are okay (y)

Animals have their own personality.
A neighbor years ago had a border collie "Digger". I could talk to him and it's like he understood. If I was picking up tree limbs in the yard if I asked him to help he would carry them putting them where I wanted.
How did he know?
Before he passed the last day my wife and I were on mowers and he came over. We shut mowers off and I was talking to him, petting him...then said go visit the wife which he did. How did he know?
Soon he went home about 1/2 mile away.

When I was growing up we had a yellow lab that was a pretty special dog. He was my dad's dog, though, through and through. Even stopped my dad from getting hit with an ice covered tree branch. Dad took him out one night in an ice storm to do his business. As my father walked down the sidewalk, the dog ran in front of him and stopped him. My dad tried to go around, the dog wouldn't let him. So my father turned around and walked back up the sidewalk, the dog followed. With that, a 6" ice covered branch came crashing down from the treetop. Landed square on the sidewalk where my father was headed. We all cried like babies when he (the dog) passed.

My dog, a pitbull is shaping up to be "the" dog for me. She's incredible, smart, fun, but knows when it's time to get to business. Me and the wife were hiking and she met some other dogs and they had a great time playing. We continued up the hill and a huge dog, between a lab and great dane size (probably over 100lbs easy) was on leash coming down the hill at us. Didn't look friendly, making a b-line for us. I put my dog, Mo in a sit. She sat and looked at me.

I called out to the lady at the other end of the leash: "Friendly?" She said yes.

That dog got within 10' of us and was nothing but teeth and snarling. Started pulling the lady toward us, she couldn't control it. My dog stayed in her sit command, but let out a very, very deep growl that got progressively louder. Her hair stood in a mohawk right down her spine. The other dog got to 5' away and I said "ok" to release her from her sit. She stood up and let out a growl like I've never heard. The other dog stopped in his tracks, put his head down, and walked back to his owner.

I adore my pup. She's my girl.

Strange van showed up in our driveway while I was at work, wife was home. The dog strategically kept herself between the man who decided it was a good idea to get out of his van to approach my wife. Would not let him near her. He wouldn't say who he was looking for, kept asking vague questions about if "your husband" is home. Once he realized the dog wasn't having any of this, he left. I told my wife to report it to the police, though I don't believe she did.

She should have done what my wife would do (she is armed and it shows at home) and told him to get along.

Sure, this is like asking what is your favorite sandwich... I'm just hoping someone can spark something in our search for a new family dog. We are more small to medium size dog folks, but that doesn't matter here. Breed if you know it. What made him or her special to you.
I was working at my place one day when a county truck came down the driveway. I asked him politely what he needed. He said he was just doing an inspection.
I had several projects ongoing there so inspectors coming by were not unusual.

He was walking around with a measuring wheel and my Australian Shepard was barking furiously and throwing himself at the fence that separated the backyard from front.
I tried to calm him down but he would not. I apologized to the inspector and told him he is not usually like this.

At one point, I asked him what the heck are you measuring?
He said he was from the Tax Assessors Office and they were going to increase my property taxes. I said, you're not an inspector, you're a tax man!
I turned to my Australian Shepard and said Good boy!

Tax man then asked if he could get in the back yard. I said you can if you want but I wouldn't. He looked at my dog, still going crazy and said, I guess we can just leave the appraisal like it is for now! Saved me thousands!

Nacho was easily the best dog and the best breed for me.
Remember though, if you are going to train a dog, you have to be smarter than the dog!
