My baler's (NH 565) operator's manual and the package containing the twine are surprisingly silent on the issue.

The previous owner (of the baler) used a knot identical to the knot tied by the knotters on the baler and my neighbor suggests that based upon his experience a square knot with the loose twine ends tacked down with electrical tape works best...hmmm.

Does it even matter?

Your opinions, please.

I use a square knot (no tape), works fine on our Hayliner 273.

My NH 65 baler manual says to use a square knot

same as above, but may I add that I also keep a wire cutters in the twine box to trim back the ends of the knot to about 1/4" to eliminate the chances of hang-ups in the needles and billhooks. This also looks better to a customer buying bales and (as usual) always asking "what happened to 'that bale' ".

Always used a square knot with the ends trimmed.

Got it. A square knot it is. Thank you all.

Grandfather taught me to use a square knot and roll the finished knot between my palms, then pull it tight again. Trim ends. Zero problems.

I tie the same kind of knot the baler does and trim the ends down to about 1/4". Never had a problem doing it that way.
