The distributor cap on my JD 2010 does not appear to be the correct one. It is my understanding that the 2010 came with either a Delco, a Prestolite or a Wico distributor.

My distributor body has clips to lock the distributor down in place. The location tab on the correct cap should not be directly below where the clip would hook to the cap. I.e. looking down at the distributor body the detent to accept the location tab is about 15 degrees clockwise of the clip.

I do not see a model number on the distributor and do not wish to pull it out. Can anyone tell me which distributor I have based upon the relative position of the clip and tab detent on the distributor body?

Thanks!

A pic or three to help what you describe would help.

Does the one you have work ? or does the tractor not run? Do you suspect someone has changed the spark/ignition system from the original?

Mayfield.. ? what state or country?

Thanks - I don't have pics at the moment.

I doubt the ignition system has been changed but the existing cap was replaced by someone else. When the existing cap is properly seated (the tab on the cap is matched to the detent on the body) the clips do not line up with the clip receivers on the cap. To engage the clips the existing distributer cap must be rotated and then the cap is not seated properly (i.e. with the clips engaged the tab on the cap does not line up with the detent on the body which would allow the cap to shift).

The tractor was running but poorly but now will not start at all.

You might also try the JDParts web site. Look closely to at the diagrams, there is Some differences between the bodies, how the clips are retained, cover below the rotor, etc. May be able to figure it out from that.

There were actually 4 distributors used on the 2010. There were two Delco choices, the Prestolite, and the Wico. One of the Delco choices had a cap secured with screws. The rest used clips. In my experience, at least 50% used the Prestolite. The cover under the cap was indexed to the distributor body with a small notch and the cap was indexed to the cover. It was possible to have the cover indexed wrong since the notch was so small and then the cap notch also would not align. I suspect this might be your problem. The Delco with clips had a very definite notch in the point cover and the cap notch was more pronounced as well. I saw so few of the Wico distributors, I don't remember how they aligned.
