For years I carried a truck load of tools and spares, everything I could think of for a breakdown. Spare starter, water pump, points, you name it. My dad was worse, he carried spare axles and springs. Anyway, I finally realized that I had not repaired anything on the road in probably 20 years. So I got rid of everything except a compact little motorcycle repair kit. Could not quite go cold turkey. But I haven't used the motorcycle kit either.
a Church bus from Southern N. Mex. Had carried a group of teen aged girls to near Santa Fe for week of camp. and returning to home area the water pump belt broke. one ranch girl made a comment that her Dad had said to use panty hose for temporary belt. so the driver twisted a pair and tied a square knot. it made better then 20 miles . so all night they continued this way. about 20 miles and replace when it broke. Next morning at church the group related the experience .then one girl said if need one more pair some one was going to have decide what else would work.
