What to you do with wood ash from fireplace?

When I burned wood I tried spreading the ash on a steep portion of the driveway. This area is approximately 1200 feet from the house. The vehicles brought the ash back into the carport and eventually it got tracked back into the house. What a MESS. After that, I threw it in the garden where it got rototilled every spring.

I put it in a metal bucket and set it on the porch for a few days until I'm sure it's not hot, then I chuck it in the woods.

I may be wrong but a few years ago I read someplace that the only time wood ash helps the garden is just as you rototill it in. Putting it on the garden a few weeks or months ahead doesn't do anything. But it probably is as good a place to get rid of it anyway. I just dump mine on the lot line, my side.

On the field until almost spring then they go on the driveway.

I spread it on areas where moss is taking over. Takes a few applications, but it eventually kills off the moss.

I keep a metal 55gal drum in the garage, and after the ash has cooled a day or two in a coal bucket used to take them out of the wood stove, I dump them in the drum. We'll fill the drum completely over the course of a winter. Come spring, I tip the drum into the FEL bucket on the tractor (I have a large "light materials" bucket that is about twice the size of the bucket that came with the tractor), take that to our garden area and spread it lightly as far as it will go.

High in potash, and also lime. Great for garden, just don't get too much in a single spot.
