Anyone have any good uses for fireplace ash?

In the winter, if and when it ever comes [ over 50 degree today.. ] I spread the ashes on top of the snow or ice on my gravel drive. It helps with melting in the spring and is distributed into the surrounding area by my snow blower. In the summer, I add it to my pile of coffee grounds on top of some big stump I am picking on, to help with it's demise. But I would rather put it on the drive year round...

Like Jerry said, great for melting ice/traction on the driveway. Also add to the compost pile or just spread on the yard.

Wood Ash (pot ash) is high in Potassium (K) and will make your garden come to life. When I used wood for heat, I would spread all my ashes on my yard and it was great for the grass. You can get too much though. If you just dump a bunch in a pile on your grass it may kill it.

I know some folks who have always put it in their gardens.

I start by adding a light coat to my gardens. Once my gardens gets a coat, I spread it on my yard.

There is a lot of uses for wood ash:

you can use it to change the PH of your garden
turn it into lye
I use to use it for traction on snow what a mess it made!.

A little bit of ash on a paper towel is great for cleaning stains off stainless steel appliances (like a cook top stove). Also great for cleaning the windows of the fireplace.

I empty the ashes into a metal bucket. When I am sure the ashes have not burning coals or if the ground is wet I toss the ashes in the garden or in planting areas.

I have tossed the ashed and hot coals on the driveway when we have snow/ice to help melt the mess but I don't like to fertilize the gravel.:laughing::laughing: Waste not, want not as my granny used to say. :D:D:D
