I have new construction that will be complete by mid December and would like to know if there is any grass that can be planted in December and grow.
Has anyone here planted this late and has it come up?.Thanks for any input.

Any lawn grass you put down in mid December will not germinate until spring. It's just too late. I don't even think there are any winter cover grasses that would germinate at that time.

So winter rye grass,if planted in Dec will germinate and grow .
True?.

Would that also be called perennial rye?

On the rye grass thing? there is annual and perennial rye grass, I recommend the perennial grass, it keeps on coming back year after year

However, most likely the winter rye mentioned in Oklahoma is an annual. Some plant a mixture of winter rye and winter wheat and some plant one or the other. We are a bit past normal planting time in south central Oklalhoma but with the current warm afternoons hitting high 80's and low 90's it would be worth trying if you got right at it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- December is too late and short of a climatic miracle you would not get germination till next spring, at least here.------------------------------------------------------- I'd be thinking of maybe a straw cover to control erosion around a building site. I have rolled out round bales of my hay for that purpose and that seeded some of the areas as well as protecting against excessive washing. ------------- Pat

I just planted 150 lbs of perennial ryegrass, the label listed the typical fall season for planting. Sep1 to oct 15 or something like that. The grass is supposed to be pretty far along before first frost or it will burn and die.

I don't think winter rye is the same as perennial ryegrass. You can certainly spread the seed in December knowing that you won't get germination until Spring. So you may want an additional cover layer of mulch.

The rye i use is annual, i don't remember if it says "winter rye" on the bag or not, thats what we've always called it. I beleave it is a lot cheaper to buy than a perenial. I plant it every year about this time, "doing it this weekend" it's yet to ever fail in 5 years.Again this is in se oklahoma, i think december might be to late.i usually plant the rye and oats i sept or oct seperatly but gonna mix them this year, makes a cheap pretty green field all winter and the deer and turkey luv um. Cost around $7.oo for 50# one bag per acre. kje
