What To Do With Retired School Buildings

The county I in live over the next few years 2 elementary schools will no longer will be needed. Most likely the school system will surplus them back to the county.

What are others aware of that has been done to make use of retired school buildings? If you are aware of businesses that have made use of them, what type of business? I would hate to see the schools go into disarray and end up just being a boarded up building falling apart.

Back ground on the buildings. Maintenance has been kept up on the buildings. The schools are on well and septic. The surrounding zoning is agricultural, but this could be change. I do not think the county will want to fund the use of those buildings for public use.

I know of several churches that are in old schools, the only business I know of in one it Taylor and Boody (spelled wrong) one of the most respected pipe organ makers in the U S in Staunton Va.

Assisted living apartments, flex space, and haunted houses are a few of the ways i have seen them converted.

How about U purchase them and turn them into very low security dorms. Maybe white collar prisoners, home for unwed mothers, rent them out to the INS as holding spot for illegal aliens, weekend retreat location for church groups, find a monastery that needs to expand, summer camp for kids.

A complete school would have water, climate control, bathroom facilities, meeting rooms large and small, cooking facilities. If it was the '60's, it would make a good commune. Let us know what happens to them.

In this area surplus school buildings have been converted into apartments, some leased out as office space, others leased out for storage space. Some were taken apart and recycled, some demolished and new construction built.

We've had one that was converted to artists studios. They are able to live in their studio. One school was bought by a large family and they made it their home.
