Mowing about 3 acres of land around an elderly womans home. She lives by herself, no husband.

Takes me about 1.7 hours, sort of a pain with numerous low hanging trees and numerous outbuildings that need to go around (some spots like a "maze").

She wants to pay me, told me she was paying a guy last year who could no longer do it for $60.

Can I ask what is the going rate to mow?

Can I assume that $60 is a VERY fair price?

If I only had to do this once this summer I'd do it for free, but on a regular basis this will take some time out of my scheduel.

Told her I would get out the chain saw and pole saw and take care of a LOT of low hanging branches and smaller dead trees (probably a good days work). Will load everything in a burn pile far away from the house (she lives in a VERY old farm house with over 90 acres, but apparently is owned by her son who lives over three hours away and apparently can't get "home" to do the work)

What would anyone in the "bush clearing business" charge?

I honestly think that she does not have much money, and would like to help her out.

I've helped her out with the humane society and I really like her and think shes a good person which makes me feel somewhat guilty if I think I'm charging too much.

Top it off, I really don't need the money, but by the same token, she lives about 5 miles down the road and loading the mower, getting gas and "wear and tear" on the machine is worth "somthing" due to the amount of time out of my day. Looking at doing the grass every two weeks to help keep her "payments" down.

If this is true, then charge her what the "other guy" was charging & do the brush cleanup for free at your own pace. After all the brush cleanup should make the 2 hours needed to mow her lawn go faster??

I did the same thing for an elderly lady that lived about a mile from me. Her son was only 15 minutes away, but never helped with anything. Mowed her place a couple times every summer for free. She isn't with us any more. Glad that I helped her out.

My next door neighbor (Ron) is 78 years old. He mows directly around his house. He then takes 5 or 6 passes on the street side of my lot with his small Craftsman riding mower

I have for the past 6 years mowed the rest of his lot for free, roughly 3 acres. It's my way of making up for being an ornery kid. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Sig,

Maybe you could mow around her house every other week and possibly using a brush hog twice a year on the rest of the property. This is all depending on the layout of the lot.
