What tires do you prefer on a big truck?

Firestone Transforce AT.
A buddy of mine has them on his 2500hd and he has over 80k on his current set.

To me 285's are a nice overall upgrade to a better tire. They're only slightly larger than a typical stock tire so you won't heighten your rear axle ratio much, they're only slightly wider without being too wide where they start putting excess stress on drive train components, and they're only marginally higher priced than most stock sized tires.

A lot of the reason why 3/4 ton and up diesel trucks tend to eat tires faster is because of the torque. That can be controlled some what with easy acceleration and lessening the amount of jack rabbit starts you do, but you can only go so easy before it gets to be a pain. So far I've got 61k on my factory Ameritracs, with at least another 10k left.

My Dodge diesel has 40K on the factory tires. They are BFG A/T with an "E" load rating. Will probably get another 15K or better out of them before needing replacement. I have a 50/50 mix of running unloaded and running OVERLOADED.
If you have the added weight of a diesel, buy E range tires and maintain proper inflation pressures.

You guys must either have the lightest foot, smoothest roads, or the garage queen trucks because me and my friends will not get 36,000 miles out of a set of tires on a diesel truck.

I very rarely take my truck out on the road with less than 10,000# or more behind it.

I'll soon be replacing Cooper Zeon LTZs' that will be lucky to make 20,000 miles. Michelin A/T 2 or BFG A/T KO look to be my final choices.

Hmmm....I must be actually lucky on this one, because I'm at 60K miles on the original tires on my 06 Dually diesel, and 60-70% of the mileage is pulling a trailer. The only issue I've had is the front left was cupping pretty bad, and I've done an alignment/balance and swapped the spare for the front. I'm thinking they have another 10-15K left on them.......

It must just be hit or miss. My co-pilot has a Yukon Denali. His factor tires got 70,000 miles on them. He replaced with the same thing and he was telling me this morning on our flight that he is going to have to replace them in the spring at 40,000 miles. Same tires, same truck, same driver, same roads, ect????

I know of guys that have bought Nittos for a Dodge 4x4 with the diesel and didnt get 20K on them before they were junk..
A good fried of mine THOUGHT he was buying the exact same tire that came off of it when he purchased some BFG A/Ts. Come to find out, they were D load range tires, the factorys are E.
Personally, I am a firm believer is Michelin and BFG. For those who dont know, BFG is owned by Michelin.
And trust me.. I DON'T have a light foot!!!.. My typical highway cruise speed is 20+ above the posted speed!!!. I tend to leave the red light at 15-20 psi boost and pour on the throttle from there..

with the title of this thread, i was expecting a semi-truck tire discussion. since when did a one-ton pickup become a big truck?

Can you give some more reasoning as to why the Firestone AT is "not the way to go"?
