But tell me, if you rent a bulldozer and push the stop button to kill the engine, but leave the key on and still counting hours, would you still be a fan of that type of primative hour meter?

All the dozer(s) and bh(s) I've rented or seen rented were all electric, turn off the key off and the engine dies just like most of the new Kubotas. Actually you need to key on to operate the hydrostatic and move the BH (DAMHIKT) When you rent an airplane it's time the engine is running.

To me that's better than mid/low rpm stuff. As I mentioned, running down the road puts more time on than low rpm bushhogging. I may put a clock on mine. I've missed dinner because of that once to!!

I saw the posts about this a while back. I've never heard on a certain RPM thing. When i worked on engines an hour of meter time meant 60 minutes, idling or full load. And when I rent a dozer or back hoe, an hour is an hour.

Must be renting cheap stuff. Last Bobcat I rented had a very fancy overhead dash and a digital proofmeter. Ran it all weekend and clocked 6 hours

This would be interesting, and why would a rental company run a proof meter...that's less money for them. I've never rented a bobcat, maybe they are like a tiller or the aeiriator (sp?) I rented for the yard, rented by the day, use it as muchas you want. In my case I cooped and aeriated 3 yards in the 4 hour rental.

Of course, the overage rate gets pricey. The last dozer had 2 meters as did my BH. The standard in the dash with the tack, and the electric. The BH was a Ford 555, 4-5 years ago when I did the house, the electric meter was mounted on the panel to the right of the operator, I think the key was over there to. The dozer was a Dressor, pretty new, I think kit was in a box, lower left of the operator.

I know I watched the BH like a hawk because I thought I would run short of time, digging a septic, field lines, remove part of a hill behind the house, and set a culvert. We ran over a little(just under an hour) and they didn't charge.

They charge for one day on weekend, provided you stay under 8 hours on the clock. I reckon the proofmeter is factored in. It is a BIG outfit and the rental wasn't cheap ($400 with a skid loader and a hammer jammer).

The Bobcat was a *blast*, but man they do tear up the ground. It was so strange going from a TLB to a bobcat (joystick steering and foot control for the boom) I was scared to run WOT, probably woulda rolled it.

The wife seemed to enjoy it.

Don't get me wrong, on a rental that's what i would want!!! More for my money. But the ones I've used had an electric hour meter.

Tonight I am going to my dealer where a Kubota rep will be there to answer questions. Besides this clock question, I am going to ask him if Kubota looks at this and other forums for comments and complaints about their products.
