What the heck is making these holes?

Very well could be. If not, they are probably powder post beetle larvae.

All the Powder post beetle holes I've seen were very small, 1/8" or less

This has been an Awesome thread. Been thru all 41 pages this morning with great anticipation. But it was a bit anticlimactic with no conclusive answer. But I do like this investigative work. Keep this thread alive.

An excellent suggestion Threepoint.

The camera tip should be (check first) liquid 'proof' so that you can look into your fuel tank too... in case there's a biological growth or a bug blocking the fuel line.

All sorts of uses.

Maybe I should go out and drill some holes in the barn floor so I can get my wife to agree with an inspection camera

But these holes are 1" diameter with smooth sides, any bug will make the sides a bit rough. And since these holes are evenly spaced and all in a row, I'm sticking to this was an old beam that had a pin in it, boards were sawn from this beam, and after all this time, they finally shrunk and fell out or rotted away.

Carpenter bees make holes that are perfectly round and smooth, about 3/8" diameter.
They absolutely looked drilled.
