What state is the cheapest place to retire at?

/ What state is the cheapest place to retire at? #41
My parents considered healthcare providers and church as parts of their retirement choice. Getting away from snow also. My parents moved to Georgia from Ohio probably 10 years after we did.

A friend moved from Georgia to Florida. He had a few health issues and thought he was knocking on deaths door. His wife packed him up in the car and headed to Arizona to a son's home and to find some competent doctors. He is getting back to healthy again. I have not heard when they are heading back to Florida in hopes of finding doctors that will doctor instead of prescribe to kill.

Contrary to Brin's post if you jump the fence you can still sneak into Georgia. At least some parts.

The only problem I have with Florida is, its HOT. Being here in Texas I know about HOT, and we don't have any personal income tax here either, so why not just retire here? What I'd really like is to retire in the mountains of New Mexico where its cool in the summer. Probably won't happen because of all my family here in Texas.

I've lived in Miami for 50 years- about 15 years too many. Bought property in North Central Florida - Nice people, much better pace of life, but weather can be very hot and very cold. The good news is it doesn't stay cold for long.

In terms of costs, no state income tax, property tax is not that bad, sales tax is under 8 percent, and other Cost of Living items are less in North Florida than South.

Now, if I can just sell the Miami house...

Please note dmccarty was in Florida 20 years ago and things are not quite like that anymore. - - - The problems he mentioned in SE florida have spread up Florida's east coast to the Space Center. There are a lot of folks from Miami and New York moving into our neighborhood. We used to have annual neighborhood picinics, but that has stopped. The attitudes of these two groups of people are "unpleasant" and not in line with what Florida used to be. Except for me all of the original folks have moved out, and now that my kids are grown, our house is up for sale. We'd planned to move into the Florida panhandle area. The state itself is great. Tax situation is favorable. There are some good doctors here if you can find them.

There are also some other states that are considered good states to retire in. I think there's 5 that are popular destinations, don't remember the list, but Florida, Texas, and South Dakota are 3 of them. Yes, South Dakota. You may want to visit one of the RV forums and browse some of their threads. they'll explain which states and why they are good places to retire.

Sounds like you are agreeing with me.

What has improved in FLA?
Property Taxes?
House Insurance?
Car Insurance?
English is NOT a second language in Dade County?

I go back to Florida every year. I know the traffic is worse. Not sure how that is possible though but it is...

Houses are no longer built on swamp land?

Ok, the houses are much cheaper. :D:D:D

My parents have been retired to SW Florida for 20 years now. I am thinking about doing the same. I am interested in anywhere without snow.

Go visit south Florida in August, or May, June, July, September and see if you like the heat. And it AINT a dry heat!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Tampa and Orlando are worse it seems because of the humidity and lack of wind. At least on the coast you can get a breeze. :D One would think Tampa would get a breeze but if it does it cannot cut the humidity.:laughing:

I have been in places in South Florida where the humidity was so high you could see your breath. NOT fun. :D

Snow is no fun. We are about to get our third hit of the season which is three too many. But at least the snow is pretty. You cannot see heat and humidity. And if you could it is still UGLY. :D

When I moved to NC I almost froze to death for three-four years until I got used to the climate. I was used to the heat in FLA an no amount of heavy, warm clothing would keep me comfortable. I would wear two layers of shirts to work, a heavy wool sweater, AND a heavy coat to meetings at work. I am NOT kidding. :D:D:D

So you can adjust but it might take awhile. And taking awhile will not be fun.

Why not try California? I hear the weather is really nice. And, they need some new suckers...er, ah... I mean taxpayers. You'd probably be welcomed with open arms.
