Ok, I am confused.

My book, which is not the manual, just a guide, shows a 2004 GMC1500 4x4 extended cab with only 4.10 gears. The short bed version tows 8,800# and the long bed tows 8,600#

Chris I think your book is wrong. GM has had the 4.10, 3.73, and 3.42 available in the 4x4 ECSB combo for a long time. My '97 did and my '99 does. Heck, even our '08 Suburban with the 5.3 and 4L60E tranny also has the 3.73.

I just bought an '06 Chevrolet 1500 crew cab w/tow package, 5.3L, 4WD, 3.42 rear end, shows tow capacity at 7400#. ~~ grnspot

I figured it was wrong on that year. For 05 it shows 3.42 though 4.10.

If its any help the 3.42 tows 500# less than the 3.73 and 1000# less than the 4.10.

Example: 3.42 7,600# 3.73 8,100# 4.10 8,600#

My 04 GMC Xcab shortbed 4x4 was a 5.3 with 3:73's...It towed very well...You will use some RPM's if you have a lot of hills, but it keeps making power.
