Ok, I've been borrowing a 4' rotary cutter from a friend for a while and am going to go get my own.. ( besides.. I'm tired of cutting is lawn all the time! - in exchange for the use )

Question now. What size rotary cutter will my 1920 pull? And also, what size cutter will an 8N pull.

It looks like I may be getting a good condition 8N soon, and wouldn't mind a cutter that both could pull. I'm guessing 5'

Ideas? I know that I will need an over-running clutch for the 8N right?

I don't know what the HP of a 1920 is, but for comparison my Boomer has 29 HP and handles a 5' bush hog easily, even in 5' tall grass (thick) and brush.

I know an 8N will handle a 5' bush hog, I know several people that have that setup. If it doesn't, the engine needs a rebuild! Yes, definitely get an over-running clutch for safety

The 1920 is about 32 hp at the pto, so sounds like it should be no problem. I know that an 8n is only like 24-26 engine hp.. so what? about 22-23 hp at the pto? But yes, I too have seen many 8n's with 5' cutters. I'm going to look at the 8n on friday. The guy says it runs good, and has lotsa new parts. I can't wait till I hear it start, run, and drive.. that will tell alot.

Thanks for the reply.

I was looking at a 1920 before I got my TC33D and I was going to use a light duty 6' cutter with it (Rhino SE6). It would handle it without a problem. I don't know if the 8N would handle it though?

My L2500 is rated for a 6 foot cutter (I have a 5 footer) and has about 27 pto hp. 5 footer should be no problem at all for the 1920 and sounds like you could go 6 foot

For the 8N I'd get either a 5 or 6 foot. The 1920 is one powerful machine. A 7 foot would be no problem and you could probably even go to an 8 foot unit.

Ford 8N
21.06 PTO HP

Ford 1920
28.5 PTO HP

New Holland TC40D
33.2 PTO HP

I'd stick with a 5' rotary cutter for all the above for "brush hogging purposes"... on the 1920/TC40D on mowing "field grass" and nothing else up to a 6' cutter...

all transmission driven PTO's (non-live) require an overrunning clutch... old ones such as the 8N-9N-Fergies are external mounted... the newer units mostly are internal from the factory...

I'm just fine thanks, /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif but I guess based on your comments we should stop using that 6 foot cutter on my dad's 1720 and I'll have to tell the farmer neighbor that that 1920 he's been hogging with for years can no longer pull that Woods Cadet 84 (7 ft). The hand-me-down 5 foot I occasionally pull behind my TC40D feels like a toy back there and I long for something in the 6 to 7 foot range. My 40D would have no problem pulling a 7 foot unit. Yes, 8 foot would be a stretch, but I think even it could work behind a 1920 or 40D if the field is kept relatively short. I gotta disagree on the use in "field grass". Here in southern Michigan, where the grass in the early part of the summer grows tall and thick, we find it can put the biggest burden on the cutter or RFM. I'll take a bunch of small trees and brush that almost instantly blow right out of the deck any day over a field of tall grass that take some time to clear from the underside of the deck. I'd recommend a smaller rotary cutter if that's what it was going to be used for, not the opposite. ...just our experience here. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
