Rear Finish Mower What size of Rear Finish / Grooming Mower for JD 2305

24 hp gross / 18 hp pto 2305 tractor: 48", 60" or 72"

I notice ranges of HP for various size mowers -- 48", 60" and 72" for 15 to 30 HP tractors. Don't know if they mean "gross" or "pto."

Any comments, advice ... are greatly appreciated.

all i can tell you is have the same horsepower (different color) and i pull a 5 ft' (60 in.) RFM with no problem wahtsoever.

I agree. My mahindra 2015 is rated at 17.5 PTO HP, and i have use a 4 foot brush hog, (have used a 5 foot, but it was sometimes a little too much). I run a 5 foot finish mower. I think most would agree that you can go a foot wider on a finish mower than whatever size hog you run. I'd go with the 60inch.

My tractor is 24 gross HP/ 20 PTO HP and I mow with a 72" RFM and have very few problems. By that I mean as long as I keep up on my mowing, I can mow in high range/high gear and still get a nice cut. If the grass is really high or extremely wet I have to slow down a bit.

I'm running a 72 inch RFM on a 2520 (21.5 PTO HP) and it has no problems from a power standpoint, even in heavy grass. However, I think weight is the main consideration. My RFM weighs 650 lbs and it's all the 2520 wants to lug it around on the hills, frequently requiring 4WD to get enough traction.

If I had a 2305, I would go no bigger than a 60 inch RFM.

However, that being said, I have seen pictures of a guy pulling an 84 inch RFM behind a 2305, but I think he had pretty much of a football field lawn to cut...
